Main objectives… • Practice organizing a speech, using effective transitions & powerful openers/clinchers • Effectively use a visual aid • Use credible sources to support your claims & cite them (using APA style!!) • Increased comfort being onstage!
Imagine you’re an investigative journalist…
You’ll choose a current issue, controversial topic, or interesting person, research it, & present it OBJECTIVELY. Purpose: to inform Organizational pattern: Categorical or temporal Time limit: 4 -5 mins Source requirement: 3 CREDIBLE sources! Must use a visual aid!!
Choosing a topic… • Should be… Timely Relevant to audience (or make them care!!) Interesting/challenging Something you care deeply about Something you know a lot about or want to know more about! – Sufficiently narrow (ex: “drug use in USA” pot use in non-legalized states) – – –
EXAMPLE TOPICS? renewable energy sources GMOs/modern farming animal testing “fad” diets childhood obesity use of performance aids in sports • Plastic surgery • minimum wage • • • • texting & driving Cyber-bullying Animal communication Oprah Composting/recycling Herbs as medicine Cloning ANYTHING ELSE!!!!
What you’ll do… (1) Add your name & topic to our shared Excel spreadsheet to sign up for a timeslot to present (opens Thursday 4/19 @ 5 pm - due by Friday 4/20 @ 5 pm) (1) Choose topic & research it! (2) Design speech using outline template (3) Design & use a visual aid (4) Practice *smart*
On Speech Day… • Arrive on time & ready to go • Wear classy dress • Bring these things… – – – Your visual aid (or whatever you need to access it) A hard copy of your completed outline 2 hard copies of the peer eval sheet Your bullet point notecards (if you want them) Your phone to video-record yourself
Outline Organization • Intro • 3 main points w/ 2 sub-points each – Organized categorically or temporally • Conclusion • 3 References! NOTE: you’ll need to VERBALLY cite each source (source & year)
Peer evals! • I’ll email you to tell you (confidentially) who you’ll be evaluating • Bring 2 hard copies of your peer eval form on speech day • You’ll complete the evals while they speak & turn them in @ end of class • It’s ANONYMOUS…but don’t be cruel!
At least 2 things!! At least 1 thing!! No point totals needed!
Self-evals! • You’ll use the “stop, start, continue” method (1 -2 pages, 5 pts. ) • Remember to watch your video at least TWICE before writing up your response • Due Friday 5/4 @ 5 pm (with Week 5 Module)
Grading Criteria (1) Fulfilling basic requirements (12 pts) – – Time limit (4 -5 mins) Excel spreadsheet Used @ least 3 credible sources, cited using APA style Notecards contained bullet points, NOT full sentences (2) Introduction (12 pts) – – – Opener aroused interest & was relevant Introduced the topic Clear, succinct thesis Convincing & relevant credibility statement Convincing & relevant audience relevance statement Previewed 3 MPs
Grading Criteria (cont. ) (3) Body (25 pts!!) – – – Had 3 MPs that were clearly stated and separate Each MP had 2 relevant sub-points Each sub-point was explained using a story or specific example Used effective internal transitions Sources supported body points (4) Conclusion (12 pts. ) – Restated thesis – Reviewed 3 MPs – Clincher – ended confidently & conclusively
Grading criteria (cont. ) (4) Delivery (24 pts. !) – – – – Professional language Vocal variety/speaking w interest Volume Dress style Conversational delivery style Eye contact Gestures/movement (5) Visual aid (8 pts) – Creative, conveys key info, enhances rather than distracts – Carefully designed and planned (6) Overall quality (12 pts) – Challenging topic – Taught us something new 105 points total!
