Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1. 5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1. 5 minutes to read it. You are hungry, so you buy a packet of crisps. You eat the crisps and throw away the packet. No problem, right? Wrong! The disposal of rubbish has been a social and environmental problem for thousands of years. The first landfill site in history was opened by the ancient Greeks in about 2, 500 BC. They realized they had a problem with rubbish in Athens, so they dug a big hole several kilometers outside town, where all the rubbish was thrown. The problem is that we’re producing a huge amount of rubbish each year, and the existing landfill sites are nearly full. Finding new sites isn’t easy. Where are we going to put all our rubbish in the future? We’ll have to reduce the amount of rubbish we throw away. The less we throw away, the more we help the environment. Next year, over 80% of Europe's rubbish will be dumped in landfill sites and less than 20% will be recycled. So what's the problem with that? Farmland the countryside have to be destroyed - that's bad for the environment and for the farming industry. Plastic, for example, takes about 450 years to degrade. We can't burn a lot of it, because the gases that are given off pollute the air. So what can we do? We can all do our bit to help solve the problem by remembering the 3 Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. We've all got to reduce the amount of rubbish we throw away. We can do that by buying unpackaged goods, like fruit and vegetables, rather than goods which are wrapped and packaged in plastic. Also, try not to buy disposable products like single-use cameras and non-rechargeable batteries. Try to use things as many times as possible before you throw them away. Glass, paper, plastic - they can all be recycled. Recycling cuts down the waste going to landfill sites and also means factories need to produce fewer new bottles and packets and paper. That means there's less pollution going into the atmosphere from the factories. It also leads to fewer trees being cut down to make paper. Protecting the environment is not a load of old rubbish!
