Jose De Escandon was considered the father of the lower rio grande valley. He served as a military commander and governor of an area that is present day larado. He also led spains expansion efforts into south Texas. He sent settlers to the land between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River.
FRAY DAMIAN MASSANET Convinced the Vice-Roy of New Spain to colonize East Texas and convert Caddo’s to Catholicism. He tracked down French settlements and established missions amongst the Tejas Indians.
ANTONIO MARGIL DE JESUS -Spanish Franciscan Priest who founded several missions in East Texas included Nuestra Senora de Los Dolores and son Miguel de Los Adoes. Remember this common fact Spanish Built Missions!
FRANCISCO HILDAGO Called for Mexico to fight for independence from spain and was a minister of San Francisco de Los Tejas. He retired at San Juan Bautisto.
RIVERS This Physical features influenced where missions and presidos were built. We’ve talked extensively about Rivers, think It through. Before there were roadways crisscrossing America people had to use rivers for transportation which is which most of the major cities and missions existed along the waterways. Growth would always start at the river and make it’s way outward from there.
TOWNS towns grew around some of the missions and presidios. What were the Missions and Presidio’s built near? Water!!!! Here again we see that water influences where things were built. This is a major factor in establishment. The River is where the city began and everything that grew afterwards came from there.
INDIAN QUARTERS AND THE CHURCH Were always inside the mission.

EL PASO AND SAN ANTONIO Both of these cities reflect the Spanish language and culture of Spain.
HOW DID SPANISH ADAPT TO THE ENVIRONMENT? Spanish settlers who came to Texas cased the design of their homes and missions primarily around what was available for building materials.
FOOD What the settlers used for food was crops and using wells.

USED FOR CLOTHING Animals. Native Americans always used every part of the Animal. Do you remember when Cabeza De Vaca wrote about how they would grind down the bones and every eat those? The Native Americans were exceptionally talented at using every part of the Animal that was killed.
