INTRODUCTION The “span” refers to the number of subordinate a manager or supervisor can supervise, manage or control effectively.
If the number of subordinate placed under one manager is too large, it will become difficult to effectively control them and the desired result cannot be achieved
If the number is too small, the time, energy and abilities of the supervisor are not utilized fully and the task may not be accomplished
FACTORS INFLUENCING THE SPAN OF CONTROL
 1. THE CAPACITY AND ABILITY OF THE EXECUTIVE A person having better abilities can manage effectively a large number of subordinate as compared to those have lesser qualities.
 2. Competence Of Subordinate If And Training the subordinate are skill full persons, superviser have a wider span those who are unskilled.
 3. Nature IF Of Work the work is a complex one it require more supervision than work which is not complex.
 4. Time Available For Supervision THE span is narrow at heigher levels of management and at the level of lower span is in wider mode.
 5. Effectiveness Of Communication System Faulty communication put a heavy burden on manager’s time and reduces the span of control. a wide span is possible if a manager can communicate effectively.
 6. Degree of physical dispersion IF more people are located at same place and under direct supervision of manager, he can supervise more people than people at different places.
 7. Quality IF Of Planning plans and policies are clear, task of supervision is more easier and span is wider.

Types of span of control
 1. Wider Span Of Supervision Also known as flat organization. Under this type of span, superviser controls and guide the activities of subordinate directly under his control.
2. Narrow Span Of Control Here there are many levels and more supervisors are required to perform the job guidance and control for different activites. Efficiency will increase but cost is very high.
CONCLUSION As I conclude that every person has limited capacity to effectively supervise and control other person. no one can control a large number of person, so span of control is very important to every organization that it implies no single executive should have more people looking to him for guidance and leadership than he can reasonably be expected to serve.
