Op Art • Op Art – An art movement where artists created the sensation of movement through optical illusion. – Short for “Optical Art. ” – Began in the 1960 s. By James Merry
Movement in Op Art • Op Art often appears to the human eye to be moving or breathing due to its precise, mathematicallybased composition. It does NOT actually move. By Bridget Riley
More About Op Art • Due to its mathematic nature, Op Art is based on geometric shapes (circles, squares, triangles, etc. ) • Op Art is nonrepresentational – art that doesn’t depict any specific object. • The elements (color, line, and shape) are carefully chosen to achieve the maximum effect.
Op Artists • Many artists experimented with Op Art in the 60 s, but only one artist made Op Art on a long term basis – Bridget Riley.
Bridget Riley • Born: 1931 in London, England • Makes very large Op Art paintings • Extremely interested in exploring sight and the idea of “looking”
