We started to work on this from the 4 th week. That was the first time we were introduced to hand sculpture. I preferred using clay for my first model. This was the first model that I made from clay.

Since we were told to make 3 hand sculptures for the 5 th week

Since we were told to make 3 hand sculptures for the 5 th week i used three different materials for that. 1) Using clay For this I first made a hand skeleton using wire and then put clay on wire. Wire was acting like a base or foundation of hand. This is the hand gesture of the mechanic holding a spray bottle with his left hand.

2) Using foil and wire This is also made from wire but in a

2) Using foil and wire This is also made from wire but in a different technique. In this I tried to show the details of hand through embossed wire. I have also inserted some thermocol in order to give a support to the foil.

3) Using xps and wire. This was the most interesting model because while making

3) Using xps and wire. This was the most interesting model because while making this I was introduced to new machines and tools. I have used wire to join the parts of the figure.

After this we were told to come up with some conceptual sketches of hand

After this we were told to come up with some conceptual sketches of hand which are abstract. I thought of using mirror and clay for abstraction. Mirror gives a geometric touch to the hand gesture which makes the hand gesture abstract. But this idea couldn’t work because mirror gives more aesthetic value to the gesture rather that abstraction. So i thought of proceeding with some other idea.

Then I came up with a hand gesture that is made up of thermocol.

Then I came up with a hand gesture that is made up of thermocol. Then I thought of abstracting it using frames. But it turned out little messy and couldn’t work much as an abstract. So again I thought of making a another prototype.

Now I made this from filecard and this time we were told to relate

Now I made this from filecard and this time we were told to relate the hand gesture with seagull and the vendor. So here is the concept note for this prototype.

Concept note My vendor is a vehicle mechanic. He repairs the parts of vehicle, paints the disrupted surfaces etc. when I went to interview him he was spray painting the disrupted parts of an activa. While talking to him I got to know that painting is one of his major task. So I chose that as my hand gesture. To make the hand model I chose aluminium sheet as my material and most of the time mechanic works with that material and it is tough and easily bendable. These traits are even found in jonathan livingston seagull who goes against the norms of the society to prove himself unique. It was a definitely tough decision. During his whole journey he faced a lot of failures but still he stood for himself strong enough and fought from society. He learnt from his mistakes and like metal sheet seagull moulded and adjusted his skills in a way to himself unique. For abstracting the hand I took inspiration from a leaf and a branch. The palm represents a leaf which can be bended in order to show the flexibility that exist in nature which helps to mould itself in a way to prove oneself unique.

After this I made one more prototype with another idea. . Since I found that I could do more with this material I thought of proceeding with one more model.

Concept note In my hand gesture the rings represent the boundaries made around the seagull. The boundaries limited /disabled him from pursuing what he wanted to achieve. Even sky is not the limit. Bottom circular belts represents his field of oppurtunities, i. e the sky where he gets freed from the boundaries suppressing him. The open area in the hand model represents sky. The circular path leads him to cease his oppurtunities and the path widens. Like seagull the mechanic was also disabled i. e he did not have a right leg but he also fought with the society norms and is still working as a successful mechanic. Both seagull and the mechanic proved themselves strong just like the material that I have used to make the hand gesture.

So this is the final abstracted model of my hand which shows the hand

So this is the final abstracted model of my hand which shows the hand gesture of the mechanic. FRONT VIEW SIDE VIEW TOP VIEW

CONCEPT NOTE This is the hand gesture of the mechanic holding a screw with his left hand using the thumb, index finger and middle finger. The first semicircle represents the palm, 2 represents the thumb, 3 4 5 represents the index finger and 6 7 8 represents the middle finger. He is a handicap and everyday he fights from the society norms and pressure and this is what happens with the seagull. In the hand gesture the palm represents the seagull who is under pressure of the society norms. None of the family member supports him while he was trying to fly. The metal sheet that is inserted into one another represents the obstacles and pressure that he was exposed to but then also the seagull made his way
