PRODUCTION UPDATE 4. 22. 20 Production and Response to the Need for Personal Protective Equipment 1. Southwest Creations is considered an essential business as a result of our work making products for shipping and pharmaceutical supply chains for our client, Clariant. We are shipping weekly at our usual rate for them. 2. As an essential business, SCC is implementing internal protocols for social distancing, providing accommodations for telecommuting where possible, and implementing additional measures for facilities cleaning and sanitation. Each SCC employee wears mask and gloves. Each SCC family receives 5 facemasks per month for her family, many of whom are at risk in jobs that don’t provide any protection 3. SCC has pivoted to respond to the demand for sewers and materials for gowns and masks. We are working with Bernalillo Fire Fighters to supply masks and gowns. We have made and shipped 1000 gowns and 1000 masks with medical grade paper and are now using a non-woven washable polyester for masks that have been approved by Bern. FF for use. They will then distribute in the county to APS, UNMH etc and we are working with one distributor and payment process. We also supplied the City of Abq transit and sanitation workers and Clariant Corp so their plants can stay operational and continue to supply SCC with much needed work. 4. We are also working with Carolinas Textile District as an approved manufacturer of PPEs. Most of the medical grade fabric comes out of the Carolinas and they have organized a mass production effort. If we have production capacity we can manufacturer for their national distribution but not for New Mexico is it is not a current priority. We can take on this work when we run out of options for supplying locally. 5. The majority of our sewing clients have stopped production as many of these are retail businesses who have closed. We still see some online traffic for our West Elm products and are doing small orders for Sachi and Mimi. Green to help them stay in business. 6. Our sewers are now working 12 hours/day 6 days/week to meet the demand for masks and gowns with our current materials. We are rotating overtime opportunities 7. We are trying to keep costs of masks affordable. Working overtime will add to our expenses but we must meet the immediate demand. 8. We have applied for PPP loan through Bank of America ($2 ll, 421) and NM State loan through the Loan Fund of $100, 000. We didn’t receive PPP loan before funds ran out but should close with Loan Fund soon.
PROGRAM UPDATE 4. 22. 20 Hacia: Toward the University Plan for School Closures The greatest strength of Hacia is the trusting and accountable relationship built with our families and students. SCC founder and Leadership Development Director, Flor Lopez says, “We are passionate because these are our kids and we have 26 years of experience and success to share with our community to achieve their dreams. ” In fact, families look to us help them stay engaged, motivated and informed as the COVID 19 pandemic has become an everyday reality and schools are closed the remainder of the academic year. The Hacia team is in direct and consistent contact with our families during this difficult time. Families are expressing fears about what lies ahead, concern for their children's education at home and how closings will impact their learning and path to graduation. They are also worried about their jobs, housing and resources for their children day to day and often struggle to communicate in English. To help families stay engaged and to offer support and hope, the EEE team is adapting its best practices to continue supporting and navigating the educational system and ensure student success: 1. Hacia staff will maintain constant communication with families via telephone, Skype, Zoom, Whats. App, and Facetime, continuing to support educational goals and maintaining our relationship of trust and support 2. The New Mexico Public Education Department and Albuquerque Public Schools’ efforts for “continuous learning” involves supplemental online and printed material for students for the remainder of the school year and creates new challenges for families. These include language translation and understanding of processes, access to resources, and technology. Hacia will serve as a vehicle to strengthen learning at home with material that is accessible for all families. 3. Hacia staff will adapt workshop material to make it electronically accessible for families. This could be in the form of short videos or clips, that focus on study skills, transitions between elementary, middle and high school as well as other needs that families identify during this time. 4. Hacia staff will create Family Engagement packets that will ensure learning at home. These packets will include home activities that focus on common core state standards, books, home learning guides, family engagement tools and writing materials for all students and their family. They will also offer a day-by-day schedule to help students and families have a daily routine that will support and continue their educational journey. 5. Hacia staff will create a bilingual bi-weekly newsletter that will provide resources and tools with the focus on academic, emotional and well-being. This will serve as a tool for families to continue engaging and motivating student learning at home. Hacia’s ongoing success demonstrates that when families, teachers, and students work together to achieve goals and dreams, children are most likely to thrive. We believe this difficult time will create even more effective tools and strategies for moving forward and effectively engage families in our communities.
