Agenda • Tonight the Power Point will focus on Developmental Checklist • From birth to Five years of age. • The assessment tool • Parent involvement

Assessment Type The assessment tool that teachers and paraprofessionals will be using is a checklist that was adopted by The Early Childhood Direction Center that is based out of Buffalo New York. The checklist provides data on development milestones for age groups starting from birth to five years old. Our developmental checklist will only be based on 4 -5 years.

Administration of Assessment The checklist should be given at the beginning, middle and end of the year, also when ever needed. Based on observations on child/children. This developmental check list will be given by a teacher and paraprofessional. After observing the children the teacher will simply check off each line that is pertained under each milestone. The developmental milestones are Movement, Milestones in hand finger skills, Language Milestones, Cognitive Milestones and Social Milestones. The checklist also provides Developmental Red Flags for the teacher and parents to see. A comments space is also provided for additional notes and comments.

Legal Considerations Confidentiality and other legal concerns All data and checklist are considered confidential and private. Any information that is released is considered illegal. Only parents, legal guardians and the teacher should have information on any child. Also it is in the best interest of the child that their data and information be kept between the educator and the parents. A good idea to keep future records for the child and the parent is using a portfolio.

Involvement A good way for parents, professionals and the community to be involved with the assessment process is by taking the initiative and time in observing your child and their developmental process. If you are volunteering in your community pre-school or elementary and you notice something about a child it is ok to let the teacher know but remember to not discuss it outside of the community.

Expectations/ Outcomes What you hope to gain/ learn from the assessment What you would hope to gain from the developmental checklist is to learn about your child and his or her development. It also shows the progress your child has made or is in lack of this could be a type of delay in a certain development but doesn’t necessarily mean that there is a disability but doing these type of checklist can give the teacher and parent proper data to go off of and find the correct outcome and help for the child.

Interactive Activity Now it’s time for a little fun! With your child or the person next to you team up and practice different movements with your body and make funny faces to each other. These are some things you can do with your child to see how their body and mind is developing. The fun part is that is doesn’t seem like a test or assessment it is being physical and fun!
