Southern Polytechnic Collage of Engineering and Engineering Technology Design and Development of Metal Fabrication

Southern Polytechnic Collage of Engineering and Engineering Technology Design and Development of Metal Fabrication Company By: Clynt Bell, Eveline Jose, Mariam Shokah, Wesly Davis Summary & Objective Our team has designed and reorganized a warehouse within the geohazard mitigation company Geo. Stabilization International, located in Williamstown, KY, with the objective of eliminating metal fabrication outsourcing costs and maximizing profit for the company. We had to identify what machinery to invest in, the number of employees needed to run the facility, how expensive it would be to run the new facility, and how to design the layout of the facility. To ensure quality, to reduce waste, and to ensure safety within operations. Our team has implemented Industrial Engineering concepts including: • 5's Method • Kaizen • Lean Six Sigma Methodology We were able to identify how much the company would save once this facility is implemented by identifying what type of machinery to invest in along with designing a layout that would increase productivity within the company. Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering FINDINGS With the assistance of Arena Simulation System, we created a model to further assist us with understanding the metal fabrication process once the facility design and equipment installation has been implemented. After processing the model, our results indicated that after an 8 -hour shift, we will produce 1, 536 parts of the metal plates and only 15 parts will be disposed of due to inaccuracies whether it is from the machinist or the machine itself. We also used Autodesk fusion 360 and Google Sketch. Up for the layout of the metal fabrication facility. CONCLUSION Our team has calculated that we only need about five months to reach a break-even point which is extremely low, but we had predicted this considering the fact that our initial investment was lower than expected and our calculated savings was very high. Currently, Geo. Stabilization International spends approximately $6, 822, 110 solely for outsourcing steel plates; with our newly designed and reorganized inhouse metal fabrication facility, Geo. Stabilization International will only incur $536, 638 meaning that the company will save around $6, 285, 472.
