Project Overview The South Y Intersection Project resulted from a 1997 study initiated by the City of South Lake Tahoe and performed by Fehr & Peers Associates to address cost effective short term improvements to traffic operations, transit circulation, and pedestrian/bicycle crossings The City formed a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) consisting of representatives from City Planning & Public Works Departments, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) The TAC provided the overall direction for development of the study scope and the technical approach in order to formulate a preferred design alternative

Existing Intersection The existing lane configuration of the intersection is as follows: US 50

Existing Intersection The existing lane configuration of the intersection is as follows: US 50 Eastbound (from Placerville) - One exclusive left turn lane (to Lake Tahoe Blvd), two exclusive through lanes, and one free right turn lane (to Stateline) US 50 Westbound (from Stateline) – one exclusive left turn lane (to Placerville), one shared through/left turn lane, one exclusive through lane, and one free right turn lane (towards Tahoe City) State Route 89 (Southbound) – one exclusive left turn lane (onto US Hwy 50 towards Stateline), one shared through/left turn lane, and one shared through/right turn lane (onto Lake Tahoe Blvd) Lake Tahoe Blvd – One exclusive left turn lane, one shared through/left turn lane, one exclusive through lane, and one exclusive right turn lane The intersection also includes several local roads and private driveways that intersect various approaches to the intersection

Proposed Alternative As a result of the final study report completed by Fehr &

Proposed Alternative As a result of the final study report completed by Fehr & Peers Associates in April of 1997, and by approval of the Technical Advisory Committee the preferred design alternative was determined and the subsequent design comprised of the following Add dedicated additional left turn lanes to all approaches Reduce the size of the islands and widen the free right merge lanes Reduce the radius of free right merge lanes Purchase right of way to widen Lake Tahoe Blvd. for dedicated right turn lane from State Route 89 Improve access control with signage, striping, and geometric design features Modify the signal phasing Include landscaping at islands and behind curb at free right merge lanes
