The Măcin Mountains are of remarkable importance in the country's mountains, being the oldest mountains in Romania The Macin Mountains National Park is an integral part of the Natura 2000 Network being the only national park in Europe to protect and promote biodiversity in the steppe bioregion. MMNP has an area of 11151, 82 ha and is part of the following sites protected at European level: 2

Framing administrative - territorial Included localities: Brătianu, Smârdan, Măcin, Greci, Carcaliu, Turcoaia, Cerna, Mircea Vodă, General Propargescu, Horia, Floreşti, Hamcearca, Balabancea, Căprioara, Nifon, Luncaviţa, Rachelu, Văcăreni, Garvăn, Jijila, Isaccea, Revărsarea, Niculiţel, Valea Teilor, Izvoarele, Alba, Iulia, Nalbant, Trestenic, Frecăţei. 29 localities are grouped in 18 local administrations (2 towns and 16 villages). Access is from DN 22 D between Macin and Horia, on the E 87 European Route, between Macin-Jijila-Luncavita and the DJ between the villages of Horia and Luncavita. 5
