THE BLUE RIDGE REGION
BLUE RIDGE REGION The Blue Ridge Region is located in the Up Country of South Carolina. It is the smallest of the 6 regions. It is part of the Appalachian Mountains.
THE BLUE RIDGE REGION In the Blue Ridge Region you will find: � Mountains � Waterfalls � Hardwood Forests � The Blue Ridge Mountains � Streams � Sassafras Mountain- South Carolina’s highest point
IMPORTANT CITIES IN THE BLUE RIDGE REGION Greenville- has connection to the rapidly moving rivers that flow from the Blue Ridge Region.
THE PIEDMONT REGION
THE PIEDMONT REGION The Piedmont Region is also located in the Up Country of South Carolina. It is located just under the Blue Ridge Region. Piedmont means “foot of the mountains”.
THE PIEDMONT REGION In the Piedmont Region you will find: � Rolling hills � Valleys � Red clay- this makes farming hard � Peaches- a thriving crop in South Carolina � Waterfalls � Swift flowing rivers- used to produce electricity for early mills and textile industries. � Monadnocks- single hills made out of rock
IMPORTANT CITIES IN THE PIEDMONT REGION Spartanburg- This city is known as the “Fresh Peach Capital of the South” This peach tower is located in Gaffney, SC which is about 18 miles outside of Spartanburg.
THE SANDHILLS REGION
THE SANDHILLS REGION This region is known as the Midlands. It is located under the Piedmont Region. This region is referred to as the “Old Coast” because it was once South Carolina’s coast line. This region contains the “fall line”.
SOUTH CAROLINA’S FALL LINE The fall line bisects the Sandhills region. The land above the fall line is higher than the land below the fall line. The Blue Ridge and Piedmont regions are above the fall line and the Inner Coastal Plain, Outer Coastal Plain, and Coastal Zone are below the fall line. This line shows where South Carolina’s fall line is located.
THE SANDHILLS REGION In the Sandhills Region you will find: � Sandy soil- not the best for growing crops � Flat land � Columbia- our state capital � Peachtree Rock

INNER COASTAL PLAIN REGION
INNER COASTAL PLAIN REGION This region is located in the Low Country. It is located right under the Sandhill region. Plain- an area of flat land.
INNER COASTAL PLAIN REGION In the Inner Coastal Plain Region you will find: � Congaree National Park � Slow moving rivers � Fossils of Ocean Animals- because it was once under water. � More than ½ this region is covered in forests. � Cotton and Soybean crops
OUTER COASTAL PLAIN REGION
OUTER COASTAL PLAIN REGION This region is located in the Low Country. It falls below the “fall” line. It is located right under the Inner Coastal Plain Region.
OUTER COASTAL PLAIN REGION In the Outer Coastal Plain Region you will find: � Forests � Swamps � Canals � Rich soil good for growing crops � Cotton and Soybean crops
COASTAL ZONE
COASTAL ZONE The Coastal Zone is a ten mile wide stretch of land from the Atlantic Coast inland. The Coastal Zone is a big tourism region. Historic sites, golf, and beaches bringing thousands of people here every year.
COASTAL ZONE In the Coastal Zone you will find: � Beaches � Sand dunes � Salt Marshes � Barrier Islands � Harbors � Ports � Rice Crops were grown here in the 1700’s
IMPORTANT CITIES IN THE COASTAL ZONE Charleston- one of the busiest port cities on the east coast of the United States. Myrtle Beach- a city that thrives on tourism.
