South America
Colonization • Spain and Portugal both came to South America starting in the 1400’s and colonized many parts of the continent. • The Aztec (阿�特克人 ), Incan (印加人 ), and Mayan (�雅人的 ) civilizations were all colonized by the Spanish. Many of these people died fighting the Spanish, or from sickness that the Spanish people brought from Europe.
Brazil • Is the largest and also most populated country in South America. • It’s capital city is Brasilia. • Brazil is the leading power in South America. • Brazil is called the “lungs of the world” for its large rainforests.
• The official language is Portuguese. • There about 192 million people that live in Brazil. • Every year they have a big party called “Carnival” and they have big parades; people dress in crazy costumes, dance, and eat a lot.
Argentina • The second largest country in South America and the eighth largest in the world. • It’s capital city is Buenos Aires and it is also the biggest city in Argentina. • Argentina’s main language is Spanish.
• Argentina went to war with the United Kingdom over the Falklands Islands. • There about 40 million people in Argentina. • Argentina was colonized by Spain, and many people who live there now are descendants (后代) of Europeans. • Football is the most popular sport.
Peru • There are 28 million people in Peru, and its capital city is Lima. • Most of Peru speaks Spanish. • Peru is also the place where the Amazon river starts.
• Peru had the Incan (印加人) civilization, which was very powerful in South America.
