South Africa and Apartheid
Apartheid • South Africans were legally classified by the color of their skin. • The racial classifications were: 1. 2. 3. 4. white black (largest group) Asian colored (mixed race)
Racism=Apartheid • Apartheid means “separateness” • Black South Africans were not allowed to vote • Black South Africans required to carry a pass with them at all times
Apartheid • Separate – – – schools hospitals beaches libraries drinking fountains restrooms • The services and buildings for whites were much better than those for everyone else.
Nelson Mandela and the ANC • The African National Congress (ANC)-fight for rights and freedoms of all South Africans. • Nelson Mandela was their leader • Mandela protested nonviolently and violently • Police arrested Mandela • He was imprisoned for 27 years.
Nelson Mandela • While in prison, Mandela continued to fight against apartheid. In a 1964 court appearance, he said: “During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die. ”
