Sources of Water (ground water, surface water, and atmospheric water) Theresa L. Theese EED 411
Student Performance Objective • Grade Level: 4 • Strand 6: Earth and Space Science • Concept 3: Changes in the Earth and Sky • PO 1: Identify the sources of water within an environment (ground water, surface water, atmospheric water, glaciers)
Where does water come from? Water is EVERYWHERE! Water covers 3/4 of Earth’s surface. The majority of Earth’s water is found in the ocean that cover most of the Earth’s surface. The water that is not found in the ocean is called fresh water. Only 3% of Earth’s water is fresh water. Fresh water is found in lakes, rivers, and streams. It is also found under ground.
Can you identify each of these water sources? Well Lake Rain River
What are the sources of water in our environment? • Ground Water • Surface Water • Atmospheric Water
What is Ground Water? Ground water is the water beneath the land surface. Water moves under the ground in the interconnected spaces between soil or rock particles. Ground water is stored in an aquifer. An aquifer is an underground layer of saturated soil or rock that yields significant quantities of water that may be pumped to the surface for use by people, livestock, or watering crops.
Where can we find Ground Water?
Did you Know? • People all over the world use ground water for many • • • uses including drinking, watering crops, manufacturing products, and producing energy. Scientists locate local ground water by drilling into underground layers of sand, gravel, and other rock material. Ground water comes to the surface either naturally through springs or is pumped from wells. Everyday in the United States, about 25% of all fresh water we use is ground water.
What is Surface Water? Surface water is the water flowing on the earth’s surface such as ocean, rivers, and lakes.
What is Atmospheric Water? Moisture or water in the atmosphere causes clouds to form, fog to cover the landscape, and humidity to thicken the air. It also causes rain, snow, hail and sleet to form.
Cloud is a form of Atmospheric Water
How are these water sources part of Water Cycle? The water cycle is the many paths that water takes as it moves on (surface water), under (underground water), and above (atmospheric water) the earth’s surface. These waters are part of this incredible journey.
What is Water Cycle? Water cycle is the movement of earth’s water. As it moves from place to place, it changes from liquid to gas and gas to liquid. It also changes from liquid to solid and from solid to liquid.
What is the process of Water Cycle?
