u. ID Technology Feature 1. Well-designed Network-Based Architecture • A tag contains an identifier (ucode), and a network provides information services. • The Internet and mobile phone networks are compatible with UID archicture. 2. Various applications with “customers” for increasing their quality of life e. g. Food information tracking service, location-aware information services, medical applications, …etc. 3. Integrated Tag System • We use not only RFID but also printing tag, active tag, sensor network tag, IR/RF beacons, … because there is no almighty tags. • UID contains an integrated tag system classified into four interface categories and seven security classes 4. Security-Aware System • UID Architecture contains ubiquitous security systems “e. TRON”. • Security classification of ucode tags 5. Mobile and small interface terminals are important for customers • Mobile phone, PDA with network connection capabilities, … GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications 6

Food information tracking services (1) o “Food communication” services • We bring the information of food production and food distribution to consumers. The consumer refers the information, and confirms the safety of the food by themselves. o For example, … • We have applied the RFID for the distribution of fresh vegetables and fruits (about 200 items). • We also put the active sensor tags with temperature sensor into the container box and pallets. • The consumers can confirm every information about the food. Result of experimental project o Most Japanese consumers expressed their good impression for this information services. • Recently, Japanese consumers are very nervous for the quality and safety of food. o Half of Japanese consumers will buy even expensive foods if their quality is certified. • They will pay more 10% cost for food safety. o There is a potential market for food safety information in Japan.
