Source cards o Use ONE 3 x 5 index card for each source o Record all the pertinent information about your source: Author, Title, City of Publication, Date Published, etc. o Number the card in numeric order corresponding to each source (e. g. , the first article you are using will be numbered 1; the corresponding source card will also be numbered 1). Put this number in the top, right-hand corner of the index card.

Note Taking Index card technique

Note Taking Format o Rule of One: One index card from one source with one main piece of information (quote, paraphrase, or summary) o The index card will have the source number in the right-hand corner, the outline number in the left-hand corner with a short heading, the copied information, a page number if applicable, and the format of information.

Putting It All Together o Form outline o Take notes based on main topics established in the outline o Assign each note to an outline section o Arrange notes in order following the outline o As you are writing, use the note cards as your supporting evidence in your topic discussion. o To cite each piece of information, look at the corresponding source card (refer to the number in the right-hand corner of the note card) and use whatever information is needed for the citation.
