ATIS’ Network Interface, Power, and Protection (NIPP) Committee Dynamic Spectrum Management (DSM) • Goal is to improve reliability and increase data rates through measurement and/or dynamic management of DSL spectral density • Bandwidth in the access remains a major item and this is especially true for copper-based access loops (i. e. , the territory of DSL) • DSM will allow network providers to manage bandwidth (i. e. , allocate bandwidth for use and recover bandwidth that could otherwise be lost when terminals using that bandwidth are turned off) • DSM has the potential of being a significant asset as the telecommunications world moves into realm of IPTV • Initial draft is currently out for ballot 2 GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications
ATIS’ Network Interface, Power, and Protection (NIPP) Committee VDSL 2 (Very-high-bit-rate DSL) • Since GSC-10, NIPP has worked on completion of the VDSL 2 standard and enhancements – Focus on moving ITU-T SG 15 VDSL 2 Recommendation to completion (approved in May 2006) • 38 contributions toward VDSL 2; 10 addressing further enhancements of VDSL 2 and ADSL/ADSL 2+ • Potential uses include IPTV • Standard includes bandplans, power spectrum densities, total transmit power, dynamic rate partitioning – Cooperative work under way with TIA TR 41. 9 to address the TIA-968 conformance criteria for the newly approved VDSL 2. 3 GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications
ATIS’ Network Interface, Power, and Protection (NIPP) Committee Network End Line Sharing Splitter Standard • Describes electrical characteristics of 4 line sharing splitters that may be used to deploy DSL technologies over metallic lines also used to provide voice-band service – Protection for DSL signals from PSTN high frequency transients and impedance effects (ringing, ring-tip, offhook) – Recently completed additions to the splitter requirements for ADSL, VDSL 1, VDSL 2 4 GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications
