Sound Energy • Sound is a form of energy that happens when something vibrates. Vibration is a quick back and forth movement of matter.

Sound Waves Sound travels through the air as ways. When an object vibrates it pushes an object through it.

Sound Waves A sound’s pitch is how high or low it is. Pitch comes from the speed of the vibrations. The number of vibrations per second is the frequency.

Sound Transmission • Sound waves can carry energy a long distance. • The energy travels to a new place, but the matter that carries it doe not.

Animals and Sound • People can hear sounds over a wide rang of frequencies. • But some animals can make and hear sounds of lower frequencies.

What is light? These are light waves. • Light is a form of energy that travels in waves. There are different kinds of light waves, We cannot see them though. The energy we see is called visible light.

reflection Reflection is the bouncing of light from a surface. Reflected light allows you to see an object.

refraction Refraction is the bending of light as it moves between different kinds of matter.

translucent Materials that allow only part of light that hits them to pass through them are translucent.

transparent Materials that allow most of light that hits them to pass through them are translucent.

opaque Materials that do not allow any part of light to pass through them are opaque.
