SOS Supports: Academic Development • Gen Y Methodology – Student tutors review materials in a way that is both familiar and relatable to the students, without losing site of the course content. – Tutors create interactive & participatory reviews that effectively involve students to not only learn the materials, but learn how to study effectively – Tutors build a wonderful peer mentorship relationship between students and volunteer tutors: • Peer Mentorship – Our volunteers are compassionate and engaged students – they are not paid but they are there because they care to help others & develop leadership skills – Our volunteers are not just tutors - they are mentors to students who create an environment where learning extends well beyond material covered for an exam • Proof – Our model has proven effective in conjunction with the array of University support initiatives provided. – Statistical analysis was performed with first year Economics students at Laurier University - study showed that students who attended the Midterm 2 Exam-AID did 15% better than their peers
