Sopro LIFE DENTAL CARIES SYSTEM Kimberly Tran Rosy

Sopro. LIFE DENTAL CARIES SYSTEM Kimberly Tran, Rosy Garcia, & Anissa Adams

What is Sopro. LIFE • LIFE stands for Light Induced Fluorescence Evaluator • Made by a company called ACTEON Group - Manufactures high –tech medical devices made to help dentists and surgeons for a safer and quicker procedure to establish minimally invasive dentistry • Detects occlusal and interproximal decay, at the most earliest stage • Dental caries is the most common oral disease worldwide, but it can be preventable by the use of Sopro. LIFE

Features

4 types of modes in Sopro. LIFE 1) Extraoral Mode - Contains 30 mm focal range - Takes profile pictures 2) Intraoral Mode - Contains 5 -20 mm focal range - Takes pictures of smiles; particular tooth, quadrant, and arch 3) Marco Mode - Contains a 0 mm focal range - Magnifies the image 115 X 4) Caries Detection Mode **** - Contains 2 modes: diagnostic and treatment mode

Caries detection mode 1) Diagnostic mode - Detects caries by producing a red or green fluorescent light - A green light will reflect if the tooth is healthy - A red light will reflect a decayed area of the tooth 2) Treatment mode -Detects any remaining caries during restorative work -It is used until the red light is no longer visible -Minimally invasive dentistry ***

2 Major Techniques KNOWN: 1) Visual Examination - Radiographs & mirror/explorer 2) Fluorescence Caries Detecting Devices - Sopro. LIFE - Other devices (DIAGNOdent, DIAGNOdent Pen, & Spectra)

Visual Examination 1) Radiographs & Mirror/Explorer - Most commonly used - Radiographs detect caries interproximally - Mirror/Explorer are used by using the sharp tip of the instrument and check if it sticks to the decayed area

Sopro. LIFE 1) Dental Caries System - Device that contains a fluorescence light to detect the decayed area - Also serves as an intraoral camera - Light is stimulated by short and long wavelengths (400 -700 nm) that distinguish a healthy tooth from a non-healthy - Red = carious lesion ; green = healthy tooth

SOPROLIFE Advantages Disadvantages Fast, easy to use, & efficient May give a false reading due to remaining deposits (plaque, calculus, etc. ) Detects caries that have been overlooked through the naked eye Requires technology skills Includes an intraoral camera and other special features Costly **** Patients are more likely involved and convinced that the lesion is present Minimizes the radiation exposure Painless

Visual examination Advantages Disadvantages Been around for centuries Can be painful Convenient Detects the lesion once it is 30 -40% demineralized Less costly Requires radiation exposure Can be time consuming
