They were looking for a place where they could have freedom of worship, because they couldn’t have their own church in England. After two months sailing, they landed at Massachusetts on a cold November day.

The Story of Thanksgiving -2 The first winter in America, half of Pilgrims died of hunger and sickness. It was a terrible time for them. In the spring, Indians came to visit. They were friendly to the Pilgrims and two of them even could speak English. They taught Pilgrims how to plant corn and other vegetables. The Pilgrims worked hard. They cut down trees, built houses and hunted turkeys in the woods all summer long.

The Story of Thanksgiving -3 Nervously, they waited for their vegetables and grain to grow. Finally, when the fall came, the fields were filled with food. The pilgrims had good clothes and plenty to eat for that year. To thank Indians, the Pilgrims treated them a big dinner. The Indians brought deer for the dinner. They ate and ate for three days together.

The Story of Thanksgiving -4 The Pilgrims were thankful for the good things they had. This was the first Thanksgiving in America. Years later, President of United States announced the forth Thursday of November would be Thanksgiving Day every year.
