1. Engineering Design Central Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge. Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006
1. 1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign. Identify the problem Research the Redesign problem Communicate the solutions Test and evaluate Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006 Develop solutions Construct a prototype Select the best solution
Step 1 Identify the problem The problem was that we needed to create a battle bot. The battle bot had to be durable enough to withstand other bots in the battle and also be able to battle back. Knocking the other bots over. Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 2 Research the problem Explore other options via the internet Student: List the internet sites that were helpful. Site 1 http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=S 5 etlgch. Uog_ Site 2 http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=42 hf. Oi. W 6 l. Uk __ Site 3 http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=49 Sm. Ymjgg. BQ ___ What did you learn from your research? A Need the right gear to gear ratio B more torque the better C The heavier the better___________ Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 3 Develop solutions BRAINSTORM COLLABORATION Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below. 1. Tracks instead of wheels__________________ 2. A hammer or a lift to fight back___________________ 3. Guards to guard the tracks __________________- Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 4 Select the best Possible solution(s) Student: Describe which solution(s) best meet the need or solve the problem. Describe exactly what idea or mixture of ideas your design team decided on for the first robot prototype? Use the next slide for your response. Only had one prototype Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006
The Somerset Berkley writing rubric will be used for assessment. Student : Skillfully and imaginatively describe what your first prototype will look like. Our first prototype was our only prototype that consisted of two wheels, two motors in the back a swivel in the front. Also a scoop we made that we attached to the front of the bot. The scoop was used to flip over and attack the other robots. We never had any problems with our first prototype so we didn’t bother changing anything on the robot.
Step 5 Construct a prototype Build a robot with your NXT lego kit Create a computer program for your robot. Use the next slide(s) for the digital pictures of your prototypes and computer programs. Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 5 evidence 1 st Prototype picture and computer program Our first prototype was our only prototype and the pictures are on my website.
Step 6 Test and Evaluate the solution(s) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Does your robot work? yes Did it perform as expected? yes What changes are necessary for the robot and the program? none Does it meet the original design constraints? yes Is it safe? yes Lab work- Modify your robot project and use the next slide to post a picture of your improved robot project. Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Step 6 evidence 1 st modified prototype picture and computer program Our first prototype was our only prototype and the pictures are on my website.
Step 6 evidence 2 nd modified prototype picture and computer program Our first prototype was our only prototype and the pictures are on my website.
3 rd modified prototype picture and computer program Our first prototype was our only prototype and the pictures are on my website. Add additional slides as necessary
Step 7 Communicate the solution(s) Provide the You. Tube link of your video that shows how your robot meets the challenge. You. Tube video link : Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006
Redesign Overhaul the solution(s) based on information gathered during testing and self-assessment activity. We could have designed the scooper a little bit more stable to make sure it wasn’t going to break but it worked fine when being used to battle and flip over our opponents. But we still used our first and only prototype. Ma. Science and Engineering Framework 2006
