For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. The new condition of salvation by grace through faith is illustrated by God portrayed as a market vendor, freely giving the best in life to any who will come to Him. There is a call to repentance based on the urgency of the opportunity, the abundance of divine grace, and the otherwise awful distance between God and man. The lasting memorial that God establishes is His people who move from bondage into authentic existence with Him, accompanied by an inner life of joy and peace.
Content of the Book of Isaiah - 4 以 的内容 - 4 n 7. The rebuke of false leaders and idolatrous backsliders (56: 9— 57: 21). The national leaders are condemned, for they are like insensitive, selfish shepherds. The result of their sin is separation from God. Idolatry, the national addiction, has surfaced once again. The unthinkable act of child sacrifice to demon gods is the unfortunate hallmark of their worship. In spite of all this, the way back to God is open.

In the Old Testament, Yahweh is always the answer to sin and its devastation in the lives of people. To be acceptable, fasting must issue from a heart of submission to the Lord and result in practical, loving deeds that center on service to others.

When we respond to the “call of the Lord to fast” there is no telling what He has in mind to accomplish! Scripture teaches us that the power of the fast breaks the oppression of the enemy. We can be certain that if we respond obediently He will accomplish great and mighty things as a result of our partnering with Him in His fast.

When allowed to go unchecked, sin is a form of death that separates man from God. However, because of a covenant guarantee of God’s Spirit and His Word to all generations, redemption is available to all who will repent.

Spiritual victory is assured as the Lord marches fully armed against His enemies (vv. 17 -18), offering redemptive relationship to those accepting His victory (v. 20). Even when the enemy’s resistance carries the force of mighty waters, the Spirit raises the battle standard—Christ’s victory on the Cross—rallying the righteous sons of Zion (v. 19), those who will stand with Messiah to rule with Him. Through the new covenant we can have God’s empowering Spirit upon us, equipping us for spiritual warfare (Eph. 6: 10 -18)—and the charismatic word gifts become a continuous flow of prophetic victory proclamation (I Cor. 12: 7 -11).

There is coming a universal spiritual fame for the people of God which is the result of a covenant based on the justice of God. The joys of reconciliation are symbolized by the intimate affections of a marriage between Zion and God.

Common to every believer are those times when discouragement, despair, and depression seem to overwhelm. This passage gives a clear identification of a “spirit of heaviness” which can be dealt with in praise. The metaphor is one of a garment to be put on. The ultimate victory, however, is contextually linked to the “vengeance of our God. ” He is the one who overthrows the enemy, while the role of the believer is to put on the garment of praise.
Content of the Book of Isaiah - 4 以 的内容 - 4 n “Surely your salvation is coming; … and you shall be called Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken” (62: 1112). The ancient prophet foresees the coming of Christ a second time and identifies those who are with Him. The identification of the sought-out city is none other than the church of Jesus, the New Jerusalem (Heb. 12: 22). In his revelation of Jesus, John also identifies the New Jerusalem as the church in Revelation 3: 12, and specifically as coming down from heaven (Rev. 21: 2, 10). In this light, the living church has reason for a joy-filled existence and a Spirit-filled impetus for mission.

A conversation with an approaching blood-stained conqueror shows that the way to redemption for Zion is through judgment on Edom. It is a work that God Himself must do because there is no one who can help. From the human side, Israel’s rebellion is a reminder that the Holy Spirit’s redemptive purpose in the Exodus under Moses has not been fully realized. Prayer for another unique Exodus-like revelation is offered.

Mosaic sacrifices and offerings are no better than murder and idolatry if they are accompanied by disobedience. Zion will bear her new sons free of labor pains and with no danger of abortion because it will be a divine deliverance. The prosperity and motherly comfort found in Jerusalem (the kingdom of God) will vindicate the servants of the Lord. All nations will see the sign of God’s glory as survivors escape a universal judgment. In the new creation, the people of God will be permanent, continual worship will be universal, and the triumph over evil will be complete as the rebels are forever tormented.

The presence of the Holy Spirit (in the familiar form of fire) and the Word (in the familiar form of a sword) assures us that God’s Word under the touch of His Spirit will be all that is required to ready His church for that concluding moment.
