Solving Word Problems Using Systems

Warm-Up: Your parents gave you their credit card to go buy a new outfit. You went to the mall and bought a total of 15 items. You only purchased pants and shirts. Pants cost $45 each and shirts cost $32 each. Your total bill was $558. a) How many shirts and pairs of pants did you buy? b) For how long will you be grounded?

Steps Define the variables 2. Set up two equations 3. Solve using elimination 4. State your solution in a complete sentence. 5. Check your solution. 1.

The “HOW MANY” problems System 1: will be X + Y = total number of things System 2: will be cost. X + cost. Y = Total money

1. You sell tickets for admission to your school play and collect a total of $104. Admission prices are $6 for adults and $4 for children. You sold 21 tickets. How many adult tickets and how many children tickets did you sell?

Define variables: A = # of Adult Tickets C= # of Children’s Tickets System of equations: A + C = 21 6 A + 4 C = 104 State your solution(s): Solve

2. Your family goes to a restaurant for dinner. There are 6 people in your family. Some order the chicken dinner for $14. 80 and some order the steak dinner for $17. If the total bill was $91, how many people ordered each type of dinner?

Define variables: H = # Steak Dinners C = # of Chicken Dinners System of equations: H + C = 6 14. 80 C + 17 H = 91 State your solution(s): Solve

POST-IT CHECK: You are selling hamburgers and corndogs at the concession stand. The hamburgers cost $3. 50 and the corndogs cost $1. 50. The concession stand collects $1300 in sales and determines there were a total of 600 items were sold. How many hamburgers were sold?

The “COST” problems System 1: will be Number. X + Number. Y = Cost of First System 2: will be Number. X + Number. Y = Cost of Second

4. Casey orders 3 pizzas and 2 orders of breadsticks for a total of $29. 50. Rachel orders 2 pizzas and 3 orders of breadsticks for a total of $23. How much does a pizza cost

Define variables: P = cost PIZZA B = cost OF bread sticks System of equations: 3 P + 2 B = 29. 50 2 P + 3 B = 23 State your solution(s): Solve

POST –IT CHECK: At an Italian bistro, the costs of 2 plates of spaghetti and 1 salad is $27. 50. The cost for 4 plates of spaghetti and 3 salads is $59. 50. Find the cost of a plate of spaghetti and a salad.

Extra Example: You are going to Disney World! The hotel is offering two different vacation packages. Plan A has 3 nights in the hotel and 2 tickets to Disney World for $580. Plan B has 5 nights in the hotel with 3 tickets to Disney World for $945. What is the cost of each night in the hotel and

Define variables: Solve N = Nights at hotel T = Tickets to Disney System of equations: 3 N + 2 T = 580 5 N + 5 T = 945 State your Each night at the hotel solution(s): costs $150 and each ticket to Disney costs $65. N = 150 T = 65
