Tiling a Bathroom You want to install new tile in your bathroom. Your bathroom floor is 8 feet by 12 feet. You are also getting a new toilet so the tile will not have to go around the toilet. The tile will edge up to the bath tub, which is 3. 5 feet wide. Lastly, you have a cabinet in your bathroom that is 3 feet by 2 feet, which your tile will also edge up against. If the tiles are 12 inches by 12 inches, how many full tiles will you need?

Monument Platform You have just been hired to move a monument at the Gettysburg Battlefield to a new location in the battlefield. As you were taking the platform out of the ground, it cracked and now you need to pour a new one out of concrete. The platform needs to be 7 feet wide, 5 feet in length, and have a height of 18 inches. The committee that hired you has only given you $530 to pour the slab, will you be able to make the platform if concrete costs $90 a cubic yard, and for what price?

Buying Enough Paint You have decided to paint your living room, but you are unsure how much paint you need to buy. First you must research how much a gallon covers and you find this website (please read the information and also find how much one gallon of latex paint covers on average). Now you figure out the surface area of your walls. Your living room is 24 feet by 15. 5 feet and has 8 foot ceilings. However, your room only has three walls (two 24 foot, one 15. 5 foot) as seen in the diagram on the next slide. Using the coverage value you found, how many gallons of latex paint will you have to buy to paint one coat on the three walls?

Is it Gold or Fake? You have just opened a pawn shop and your first customer has brought in an alleged gold necklace. You wouldn’t want to make a mistake on your first transaction so you consult the internet to find the density of gold (Please click on the link and find the density of gold on the list). So you weigh the necklace to be 10 grams and fill a beaker with 1 milliliter of water. When you drop the necklace in the beaker, the water reads 2. 122 m. L. Is the necklace gold and if not, what element is the necklace according to the density sheet you referred to earlier?
Interactive Activities Please click on this link for a paint calculator to check your answer from the “Buying Enough Paint” problem. Remember to use the coverage per gallon value you found on the website and not the recommended value used on this website: Paint Calculator Note: Since our example only used three walls, use the door section to subtract that part off. Refer to the slide with the problem if you need to for the sizes. Write on your paper what you input where and your answer, you will not use all the input areas on the website!
Interactive Activities Now complete this interactive density problem (by clicking on the link) and again writing what you fill in the boxes on your paper. Remember to use significant digits! Density Activity
