Solubility Presentation
What is Solubility? It’s the measurement/determination of how much of a solute will dissolve into a given amount of solvent. Conditions of pressure (gases) and temperature will matter We can change the solubility of a solute by adjusting/changing conditions
Types of Solutions 1. Saturated Solution---contains the maximum amount of solute per volume of solvent Should not be able to see the solute particles ever 2. Unsaturated Solution—Contains less than the maximum amount of solute for a given volume of solvent Could contain more solute if you wanted to add it, but will look the same as a saturated solution
Types continued 3. Supersaturated Solution Contains more solute than it should for a given set of volume and temperature conditions Make it by heating the sample to “cram” in more solute These are very unstable and can solidify at any moment
Liquid Solubility Two liquids can dissolve into each other if they are compatible 1. Miscible—term that is used to describe a mixture of soluble liquids 2. Immiscible—term that is used to describe two liquids that do not dissolve into each other
Gas Solubility Gases can be made to dissolve into solution if they are compatible High Pressure and low temperature makes a gas most soluble Low pressure and high temperature would make them least soluble (they can escape and have too much energy)
