Solubility Design Lab The Scientific Method Solutions Homogenous
Solubility Design Lab The Scientific Method
Solutions • Homogenous mixture that can contain two or more substances – Solute: substance that is being dissolved – Solvent: substance in greater quantity, solute dissolves within it Solid-liquid solution: Kool-Aid drink Gas-gas solution: Air! Solid-solid solution: Steel
“Like dissolves like”
What does polar mean? • A molecule or substance is said to be polar when atoms form a covalent bond in which the electrons are not shared equally. • This causes one end of the molecule to be slightly positive, and the other to be slightly negative.
So…how does this work? • Opposites attract: Negative side end of water molecule is attracted to the positive end of the sugar molecule & vice versa • Water molecules come into contact with sugar molecules • The charged poles of the H 2 O molecules will pull the poles of other molecules until all the two substances are evenly mixed
What affects solubility? • Solubility = the ability of a substance to dissolve • Factors affecting it: – Agitation: allows new collisions between the solute and solvent particles to occur – Surface area: breaking the solute into smaller pieces increases the surface area. More surface area allows for more collisions – Temperature: particles moving quicker, collisions occur more often
LAB GROUPS • You will be working in a group of 3 • Write your group members names at the top of the handout (including yours) • Each person will be responsible for submitting a lab handout with the conclusion questions answered • During the lab itself, each person will have a job. • Timer: Start the timer when begin stirring; Stop the timer when stop stirring • Stirrer: Stirs the solution • Recorder: Records the time for each trial
