Solid Waste Management at Wynn Gate Apartments
Waste generated in Wynn Gate There are several kinds of solid waste that is generated in Wynn Gate like in any other residential community: 1. Kitchen wet waste from resident houses 2. Reject waste (Sanitary, Medical waste etc. ) 3. Dry waste (Paper, Plastic etc. ) 4. E- Waste (Batteries, CDs, Chargers, Appliances etc. ) 5. Metal, Glass and Others (aerosol cans, tetrapack, glass bottles, CFLs, Thermocol, Styrofoam etc. )
3 Stages of Waste Management Segregation (at individual homes) Collection (daily from homes by Housekeeping Staff) Storage & Disposal (Big bins near the gate/basement and 3 -times weekly BBMP Pick-up)
The Role-Players 1. Residents 2. Housekeeping Staff 3. Volunteers 4. EC Members 5. BBMP Vendors for collection
Residents Purchase 2 Bins 1 Bag Waste Segregation Kit – volunteers can bulk order it for them for a cost of INR 150/ Attend training/workshops conducted by volunteers Segregate waste at source – re-arrange to make minor changes at home. Inspire all family members, especially children to throw waste in their respective bins/bags only! Punctual to hand over the segregated waste to Housekeeping staff at the designated time everyday If they missed the morning collection, they have to wait a day to hand over the waste to Housekeeping next day
Housekeeping Staff (HK) DAILY collection of Dry, Wet and Reject Waste door-to-door Maintain a log-book and report to volunteers regarding defaulters or segregation problems they are facing Ensure that they DO NOT pick up mixed waste Dumping the wet, reject and dry waste into the big bins at the Garbage Collection area Segregating some waste if required (this should not become an on-going activity – the concerned resident should instead be reminded and informed) Keeping the garbage area/bins clean Overseeing the collection by the BBMP vendor when the weekly truck arrives Keep an inventory of bins and bags and inform Volunteers in case of damages
Volunteers Evaluate the process of managing effective SWM in Wynn Gate, estimate cost of equipment needed and present proposal to EC Verify conditions of existing bins, arrange for new items and label/paint appropriately Training to HK Staff Training to Residents - floor-to-floor demos, weekday and weekend workshops Training to Maids Special fun and educative activities for kids - Encourage kids to spread the awareness Available via email/phone for any clarifications Polite reminders and education to non-conformers/defaulters Track new residents/tenants and educate them with the ongoing process Surprise checks/audits to see if the Housekeeping staff is doing their jobs effectively
EC Members Maintain a separate SWM Fund – with cash flow records like initial investment, HK salaries, money earned from penalties or from selling dry waste/e-waste etc Provide initial funds for procurement of material and on on-going basis in case of changing requirements or damages Identify two HK staff with long-term commitments, fix up their monthly earnings and decide their daily door-to-door collection time Identify on-call, back-up staff incase regular HK staff is unavailable due to any reason Manage the negotiations with the BBMP vendor Send first notice to all residents about the need for waste segregation and introduce the volunteers and HK staff Supplement support to the Volunteers and back them occasionally for communicating rules and guidelines to all residents Have penalizing system for defaulters and enforce it strictly
BBMP Vendor Ensure regular and timely waste-pick up from the premises at least 3 days in a week! Communicate the day and time of pick-up so that the housekeeping staff are available to oversee the pick-up Ensure that they don’t leave the premises dirty after pick -up (inside the compound or outside the gate)
