Johnson opened its doors in 1959 as Powell Laboratory School under the direction of Savannah State College. • Johnson High School was named for Solomon Charles Johnson, a journalist, philanthropist, educator, and founder of the nation's oldest newspaper published for the black community, the Savannah Tribune.
