Skylights can add light and beauty to a home. It brings light into a dark space, creates nice ventilation, and offers heat gain in the winter. A traditional VELUX skylight will instantly transform a room by adding warmth and depth. VELUX is the world leader in skylight manufacturing, offering skylights for your every need. You can choose VELUX as a skylight to fix a broken or leaking plastic or glass skylight, or put in that new skylight you’ve always dreamed of. A VELUX skylight also offers options like the ability to ventilate a room; either manually or by remote control. VELUX also offers a variety of glass types, shades and other options to decrease the amount of heat let into your home.
Skylights n n VELUX is truly the leader in bringing natural light into your home. When it comes to home improvement, incorporating daylight is extremely important. Why not utilize the world's best skylights, built by the largest and oldest skylight company in the world. . . VELUX! Daylight, the natural light, in homes is very beneficial. Skylights will block harmful UV light that could fade carpets or upholstery, but let in the natural light that is healthy for all of us. Letting natural light into your home through a skylight can make you more comfortable to read or see in your home during the day, and happier as your body absorbs the natural light that it needs to process nutrients as well as improve your mood.
Skylights n n In addition to lighting your home, Skylight offers you the ability to naturally cool your homes attic space using the natural light of the sun to run a solar powered attic fan. Using solar power makes more sense to save energy on running the attic fan while you save money on cooling costs by decreasing the load on your air conditioner. You also can increase the longevity of your roof, and remove moist air from your attic in the winter with the use of a solar attic fan. In drier climates, a thermal switch can automatically shut off the solar attic fan when you don’t need it. Using solar energy lets the solar attic fan run when you most need it, when the sun is out.
Skylights n n The Natural Light Energy System solar powered attic fan also continues to vent air after sunset because of its unique shaped flashing, acting like your chimney flue to passively vent warmer air with a venture effect. Become a little more “green” by using a solar powered attic fan! A solar attic fan can be installed in less than thirty minutes. VELUX skylights are designed for overhead, out-of-reach applications or for in-reach applications that do not require egress emergency escape capabilities. They come in a wide range of sizes and features with a full assortment of blinds available.
The Materials Of Skylight n n The standard material that are used for skylights are glass or plastic and off course there are other materials to choose from which are following. Vinyl windows in skylights are durable and economical. Impact glass is specially made to withstand hurricanes and extreme winds. Other skylights are made of glass which vinyl sub-frame for ensures energy efficiency, or glass greater energy efficiency that can be remotely tinted, to instantly change the amount of light let into the room.

Fixed Skylight pictures n n Fixed skylights are used solely for the purpose of providing natural light to a room. There are several different styles, shapes and sizes of fixed skylights. This type of skylight is ideal for attics, extra rooms, workshops or anywhere extra illumination is desired. The Fixed Skylight is great for visually expanding areas such as hallways, stairwells and other closed-in, dark spaces that can be transformed with natural light and sky views. It provides an economical alternative in creating a spacious home that is filled with natural light. Note: There are other Fixed Skylight styles available.
Fixed Skylight
An ideal place to have a skylight is right above a staircase. Stairways are usually dark and unwelcoming places but they don't have to be. The skylight makes this area bright and welcoming. Plus it allows light to be brought into the home without it being glaring; the stairway helps to break up that glare.
Fixed Skylight This is an example of a more modern type of stairway skylight. The staircase itself is done in a modern design which is reflected in the geometric patterns of the skylight. The purpose is still to allow light into the area but it's done so while sticking to the decor theme of the home.
Fixed Skylight This shows how the skylight itself can truly serve as a centerpiece of decor if you decide that you want to get elaborate with it. The decorations surrounding the area are all quiet which allows the boldness of the skylight to stand out. Again it serves the purpose of lighting the entire home via the staircase.
Ventilating n n Ventilating skylights provide the desired extra light for a room and also offer the benefit of ventilation. They create an updraft when opened which is an efficient way to freshen or change the air in a room. This type of skylight is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. Ventilating skylights can be operated manually, by remote control or wall switch, or they can be automatically activated via a temperature sensor. Vented skylights are a fairly recent development. Venting skylights open to allow fresh air as well as light.
Ventilating n Manual venting skylights can be opened manually. Electrical or automatic venting skylights have a remote control which opens the skylight to allow for ventilation. Rain does not leak into the room because of the vinyl stripping around the skylight's frame. Venting skylights can help considerably in hot climates, as can tinted skylights and shades for the skylights.
Ventilation skylight

VSE Electric Venting Skylight n Designed for deck mounted installations, the VSE Electric Venting Skylight is the perfect day lighting solution for overhead applications. It brings in abundant natural light and with the touch of a button, opens to let in fresh air. And if you forget to close it, the VSE also closes automatically in case of rain. The VSE skylight is now available with electronic tinting glass. Note: There are other VSE Electric Venting Skylight styles available.
Manual Venting Skylights n Designed for deck mounted installations, the Manual Venting Skylight enables any home to embrace the best of what nature has to offer. Opening for maximum fresh air, the venting skylight contributes to a home's proper moisture balance and comfort level by allowing stale, humid air to be released. Note: There are other VELUX VS Manual Venting Skylight styles available.
Tubular skylight
Tubular skylight
Sun Tunnel More like holes than skylights, sun tunnels allow a small amount of sunlight into areas of the house that tend to be dim, such as attics, basements, bathrooms, and closets. Sun tunnels don't provide a view of the outside or a means of escape, but they do provide light. Sun tunnels can be made to blend into a roofline, or have flashing that gathers light from all angles. ØIntegrated polyurethane flush frame and no-lead flashing with 4 mm toughened glass and sash in ASA (ABS plastic) 2 meter super reflective, flexible tunnel (diameter 35 cm / 14”) ØEasy to assemble diffuser kit with double acrylic insulating pane ØStandard white ceiling trim ring
Tubular Skylight: Tubular skylights are the newest addition to the types of skylights being offered to consumers. They are usually small in size, 10 to 14 inches or so across. Some have baffles to direct light through the tube. They are ideal for situations where a normal, full-sized skylight cannot be installed, as in hallways or closets. Despite their size, tubular skylights can provide large amounts of light. The tubular skylights are often found in narrow hallways, bathrooms and closets. This type of skylights captures and passes the concentrated sunlight into the building and it resembles the light bulb. The tube consists of highly reflective metal coating inside it that reflects the sunlight into the building.
Tubular Skylight: n The sunlight is also diffused to prevent the damages to the material inside. Installing the tubular skylights is also a very easy process depending on the setup of your house. Installing tubular skylights into your master closet can help you see the true colors of your clothes, helping you avoid that embarrassing situation of wearing one black sock and one blue sock to work! Let natural light bring out the true beauty of your home décor.
Tubular Skylight: With tubular skylights you use solar light power reflected through a tube to bring natural light into your home. By using a tube to harness the wonderful and healthy solar rays, you can bring in natural solar light and focus the rays of the sun for the most effective use in your home. A tube can work well in smaller applications when a traditional skylight is too large or too costly to install.

Window Shades n Skylight window shades are useful for adjusting the level of light in the room — a necessary factor if you want a dark room during the day, for napping or for a movie. These window shades open and close with a remote control. There are many different styles of skylight shades, including venetian blinds, roller shades, and blackout shades. Some shades for skylights just reduce the amount of light that enters the room, while others block all light or stop heat from escaping to the outside.

Venetian blinds Control the amount and direction of light. Manual or electric versions available. • Aluminum slats, white on inner surface, gold color metallic coating on the outer. • Manual or Electric for use with VS, VSE and FS skylights • Manual version only for use with FS skylights, GGL and GHL roof windows. • Reduce light by up to 85%. Venetian blinds
Pleated blinds Soften incoming light for a decorative effect. Available in manual form only. • Translucent white, dirt resistant treated cotton. • Manual version for use with VS and FS skylights only. • Reduce light by approx 50%.
Pleated blinds n n Cellular (honeycomb) shades and pleated shades can come with a lifting system special for skylights. Operated either manually (with a 116" extension pole) or with switch- and remote-control motorized operation, it will work on any slope or in any orientation. Cellular skylight shades are also known for being energy efficient (another good reason to use them for a skylight window covering. )They are made up of layers of pleated material. These layers form cells that trap air in them, creating a layer of insulation, keeping the heat outside in the summer and inside in the winter.
Pleated blinds n n If you want to be able to control exactly how much light should enter through your skylight, vertical blinds with top and bottom tracks might be the solution. This lifting system will keep the verticals from hanging downwards. Window treatments for skylights will help control the temperature in your home while cutting your energy bills. In the winter, you might enjoy the free solar heat that you get from the skylights, but as soon as the sun sets the heat (which rises) will escape from an unprotected window. So you will need to cover your skylight in the hot summer days and in the cold winter nights. With the rising energy costs skylight window treatments will pay for themselves in as little as one season.
Pleated blinds n Now what window treatment can you use for skylights? Consider this. Skylights are on the roof and they lay either horizontally or on a slant. How will the skylight window blinds lay properly and not hang or sag? Therefore, you can not simply hang any window treatment onto your skylight, but you must use tension shades which are especially designed for it.
Blackout blinds n Provide complete blackout from light. Manual, Electric or Solar Powered versions available. • Blind can be stopped at any position on the window. • Electric version for use with VSE skylights. • Solar Powered version for FS & VS skylights. • Manual version for use with FS skylights, GGL and GHL roof windows. • Reduce light by approx 100%. High-Performance Skylight System n n Daystar Skylight Systems has created a high-performance skylight system that not only allows natural light into a building, but also maximizes intensification and diffuses the light into a broad lighting pattern, enabling businesses to save money, increase the value of the facility, and protect the environment by being more energy efficient. During daytime hours, even on cloudy days, skylights can reduce or eliminate electric light usage and its associated costs. Daystar's brilliant, natural lighting optimizes the most powerful source of energy available - free sunlight - to provide substantial long-term energy savings.
High-Performance Skylight System n n Because the skylight's superior illumination power allows buildings to be operated during daytime hours without using electric lights, energy costs can be cut by as much as 50%. Sunlight is gathered through the parabolic dome, and the rays are amplified by the ultra-reflective lining as they strike the ceiling lens.
How to install a skylight
How to install a skylight n n n Skylights, which contribute to an evenly lighted interior, are growing in popularity. People usually know what they want when it comes to selecting doors and windows, but skylights occupy a more mysterious niche. Inaccessible and above the fray, skylights just sit up there in your roof. Yet more skylights are appearing in houses all the time. With choices expanding, many homeowners are convinced that one skylight isn’t enough. The selection process is easier than many homeowners think because almost any skylight can work if it’s properly installed.
How to install a skylight n n n The question is whether or not intentionally cutting a hole in your roof is an archaic idea. When properly installed, today's skylights, the company says, don't leak and are highly energy efficient. It only makes sense for skylight manufacturers to keep up with the times, especially since consumers are interested in energy efficiency, mold, and protection against damaging weather. Manufacturers have worked hard to engineer their skylights and roof windows to address these issues.
How to install a skylight
Plan your skylight installation Measure interior position of skylight and mark. Drive nails from inside through the roof at four corners to locate the correct area from above.
Cut away the roof Find exterior position of skylight and remove shingles to 2 inches away from the corner nails. Double check the dimensions and cut away the roof to the nail lines. Check local building codes if cutting rafters is required.
The roof curb Build your roof curb ahead of time using 2"x 4" or 2"x 6" lumber to inside dimensions of roof opening. Apply sealant along bottom of curb and place.
Sill and step flashing Form sill flashing and rest on shingles. Form step flashing beginning at bottom.
Install Skylight Now you are ready to install your skylight. Apply 1/2" thick bead of non hardening caulking on top of roof curb. Set skylight firmly upon the curb. From interior, screw the skylight to the curb through the pre-drilled flange.
Other Way For Installing
First, we remove the old flush mount skylight which is "tarred" to the surface of the plywood. This method (actually recommended at one time by the manufacturer) of waterproofing left a lot to be desired; in fact, it was destined to leak. . .
After removing the old shingles and tarpaper, cleaning up the opening. . . and replacing some damaged plywood, we're ready for the new skylight. Note the Titanium UDL Synthetic Underlayment, which outperforms old fashioned "tarpaper" by a mile.
The new skylight is secured using special clips (hidden under the EPDM flashing) screwed securely to the deck.
Certain. Teed XT 25 shingles are being installed according to the manufacturer's specifications. . . making the new, more energy efficient skylight perfectly watertight.
The new flashing system is a big improvement over the old "tar and pray" method, and much easier too. In our opinion, it's the best way to replace an existing skylight without having to make expensive alterations to the drywall and framing inside the home. Additionally, the interior framing surface is made of high strength vinyl for energy efficiency, condensation control, and looks great! This unit has the "low e glass" and argon gas insulation for optimum energy efficiency and ultraviolet light protection.
