Socratic Seminar #1 • Stand up! Find Your Shoulder Partner and say, “Don’t Leave me!” • Partner A is the person with the most pockets. • Partner B will find a seat in the inside circle. • Partner A will find a seat in the outside circle, close to their partner.
Socratic Seminar #1 • Outside circle, fill in the heading of the Scoring Guide. • Be sure to listen carefully. You may NOT check a box if you do not observe your partner doing the activity. I will be watching too. • If you check an Advanced activity, you must note what they did next to the bullet if your partner is to get credit.
Socratic Seminar #1 • Inner Circle, remember, you are in charge of the seminar. I will observe. • There is ABSOLUTELY no talking unless you are contributing to the seminar. If you break this rule you will be removed from the seminar and receive a “ 0” for today’s presentation. • Listen carefully, respond thoughtfully, and stay on topic. • Use the “Bounce Cards” and the posters for help.
Socratic Seminar #1 • Remember, you are in charge of the seminar. I will observe. • Inside circle, the first part of the seminar will last 8 minutes. • You will then have 2 minutes to conference with your partner so that you may get ideas and add more to the discussion. • Your discussion will continue for 5 more minutes. • Time to debrief and switch!
DE-BRIEFING In the course of the seminar: – What was the most interesting question? – What was the most interesting idea to come from a participant? – What was the best thing you observed? – What was the most troubling thing you observed? – What do you think should be done differently in the next seminar?
