Socratic Seminar CP English 10
Objective Students will participate in collaborative discussions with peers. For today’s objective, I will ________.
What is Socratic Seminar? Socratic comes from the name “Socrates” who was a classical Greek philosopher. Ask Questions + Formal Conversation= LEARNING! Socratic Seminars are FORMAL, ACADEMIC DISCUSSIONS where a text and/or topic is discussed.
So, why is Socratic Seminar great for students? Participants seek deeper understanding of complex ideas in text through rigorous thoughtful dialogue, rather than by memorizing bits of information.
What is your role as a student? Students, NOT the teacher, carry the burden of responsibility for the quality of the seminar. There are four ways to do this: 1. preparing 2. participating 3. sharing 4. supporting
Procedures for Socratic Seminar ● Desks arranged in a circle. ● Text given/studied in advance. ● Rules posted. ● One class period. ● Participants respond with textual evidence for support. ● Participants respond with questions to information they hear. ● Students do not raise hands.
