1. Select a Topic n Choose something that is interesting to YOU n n But keep it manageable Feasibility: Can I find the answer? Validity: Is what I’m going to study have value? Some Examples: Students; homelessness; body piercing; government; sports; music
2. Define the Problem n n n Specific and something you want to study in depth Make sure the topic can be measured Examples: country music and those who drive trucks vs. cars ; gas station attendants and college education
3. Literature n Before the hypothesis, you must research literature Helps cut back on work you must do / refines your study n Find 2 different articles, take notes, and submit: n MLA format n Will be part of your final project n
4. Hypothesis n n What do you expect to find according to a theory that you have developed Variables: factors that change n Example of Hypothesis Those that have three or more body parts pierced receive grades of B+ or higher in the Arts and Humanities n Refuting a Hypothesis can be as important as supporting one!!!
5. Research Method n Choose a method/s to collect data Surveys n Participant Observation n Unobtrusive Measures n Documents n Secondary Analysis n Experiments n n Pg. 129 – 139 in book
6. Collecting Data n Record data in some way; n n Notebooks, Copies of Surveys, Flow Charts, etc. There will be data checks n 100 total surveys, 100 total observations n n Per person Will consider study and may adapt requirements
7. Analyzing the Data n You must take an in depth look at data and figure out what it all means… Hopefully it will support your hypothesis n Find the Correlations n Data Collect/Check will be required
8. Sharing the Results n n n Written report Oral presentation in the form of a power point “Field Study Exhibition Grade Sheet” will provide complete requirements
