Symbols o Symbols are pictures that represent something.
Key or legend o A key or legend is an area on the map that shows us what each symbol represents.
Scale o Scale is the section of the map that shows how much smaller the map is compared to the real area it represents.
Directions o Directions tell which way to go.
Compass Rose o A compass rose is a symbol on a map which indicates the directions for a map.
Cardinal Directions o o North South East West
Intermediate directions o o Northeast Southeast Northwest Southwest
Latitude Lines o These lines circle the globe running east to west
Longitude Lines or meridians o Circle the globe running North to South
Equator- latitude Prime Meridian - longitude
Equator o The equator is a zero degree line of latitude that separates the Northern hemisphere from the Southern Hemisphere.
Prime Meridian o The prime meridian is the zero degree line of longitude that separates the eastern and western hemisphere.
Prime Meridian VS. Equator Prime Meridian: an imaginary line that runs North to South on the globe and represents ZERO degrees longitude. Equator: an imaginary line that circles the globe halfway between the North and South Poles and represents ZERO degrees latitude.
There are FOUR Hemispheres
• The tools that geographers use the most often are MAPS and GLOBES. • A map is FLAT drawing that shows all or part of the Earth’s surface. • A globe is a SPHERICAL, or ballshaped, model of the entire planet.
