Social Studies Grade 10 Unit Overview

Decision Making l It is an inescapable part of life. Making decisions and carrying them out is the use of POWER. Learning to use power is a critical life skill because we have to know how to get the things we want without making it impossible to live with others.

Democratic Societies l They have created Social Organizations that encourage people to use the skills of bargaining, compromise and conciliation to work out their relationships. For a free society to work well, individuals need to develop these political skills and use them effectively. Barack Obama

This Unit Introduces… l Basic decision making organizations of society. l Use the concepts as a citizen in a democracy. l Examine the concept of power and the ways it is used within the political structures of social organizations.

Social Contract l Part of this process is learning the concept of a Social Contract. It makes clear the rights and duties of the members of any social organization. l Using these concepts of Social Contract and power, students will see how political structures such as Parliament and Government make decisions and carry them out in society. Therefore, this unit emphasizes the structure or political decision making.

7 Steps used for Decision Making l Identify the problem or dilemma. l List alternative choices or solutions. l Predict the possible consequences. l Decide if you need more information. l Decisions have more than 1 consequence l Select the best alternative. l Evaluate the choice that you made.

Political Decision Making Activity l Identify 5 needs and 5 wants you have in life. (Write in a sentence) l Which of these can be fulfilled on your own? l The Answer is NONE. Humans are known as interdependent. Stephen Harper

Interdependence l Definition: Relying or depending on other species (humans or animals) to achieve one common goal. l Humans best satisfy their needs and wants by working with other members of society. l Because individuals must interact with each other in society, there must be systems. These systems allow for: l. Making decisions. l. Producing goods. l Creating meaning and purpose in life. l. Creation of culture, language, etc. l. Organizing people into an orderly society.

Social Organizations l Definition: Organizations or devices that organize and help people meet their needs and wants. l Examples? l Clubs, team, school, family, etc. l Ultimately, the goal of this course is to teach you about the basic decision making organizations of industrialized, democratic societies.

Decision Making Styles l There are 8 important decision making styles that people use in their lives. We will remember them by using the acronym DIPPICAF. What is Which way that you may ask? should we go ? ? ?

Delaying l People using this style cannot make up their minds. l They are known as procrastinators. l They have the saying “I’ll get to it later. ”

Impulsive l People using this style decide, then think about the decision later. This is perfectly acceptable in many situations, such as where to park on a busy street; but unacceptable when. . .

Planning l People who use this style are organized decision makers who consider alternatives before deciding. l They follow a definite strategy when forming a decision. Management styles

Paralysis l People using this style know they must decide but are so overwhelmed by the choices that they are unable to make any decision at all.

Intuitive l People using this style use more feeling than thinking. l “Something about the decision just feels right so I think I’ll do it. ” l We are encouraged to trust our feelings. l Some argue that intuitive decision making is a higher order of thinking than the logic or rational style.

Compliant l People using this style prefer to let someone else decide. l They have the attitude of “What ever you say. ” l Seen as followers in a group; not leaders. Hitler and Mussolini (left)

Agonizing l People using this style of decision making search for so much information that the decision gets very complex. l They are in danger of becoming “lost” in the confusion.

Fatalistic l People using this style believe that it does not matter what their decision is because the outcome has been predetermined by FATE.
