INTERDEPENDENCE Human beings live in society because they can best satisfy their needs and wants by working with other members of society. “I need you and you need me” Humans are social creatures who mostly prefer to live in groups.

Because individuals must interact with others within a society, there must be systems which allow for: Procreation of life Making decisions Producing goods Creating meaning and purpose (religion, language, culture) Organizing people into an orderly society.

SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS In simplest terms, means a ‘group’ Stem from and deal with the basic, universal problems of ordered, social life Provide order and direction within a society

INTERDEPENDENCE AND SOCIAL ORGANIZATION People are a part of society. People make up society. People influence society (structures and values) People are dependent on and influenced by society. Societal organizations are created to meet the needs of human beings. Societal organizations are created to pass on values, norms and sanctions.

SOCIAL CONTRACTS An agreement between members of a group or society which explicitly and implicitly defines how each can be expected to treat each other. Written constitution (explicit) Table manners (implicit)

SOCIAL CONTRACTS People can not live successfully together unless there is some basic argument about the fundamentals of life. We have social contracts because we rely on them for order and predictability. Because we rely on each other for our needs and wants, societies are considered interdependent.
