What is the future of Social Networking?
Let’s Look at What Social Networking Is? An application or use of worldwide communications between computers
That creates a common, shared, information space for on-line communities that exist on the computers of its host and members
Essentially … A social network of the type we are looking at is made up of computers and communications
“Computer” meaning a machine with Inputs and Outputs Memory Processing Power AND Software
INPUT CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT C PU OUTPUT MEMORY “BUS” 9
“Communications” meaning The ability to send and receive information to/from anyone anywhere in any form at any time
The underlying understanding being that all information is represented digitally and that all processing and communications is carried out digitally
The future of SN is dependent on the future of the technology
The future of ICT appears to be continued advancement in the means to communicate information based on the capability to process information and signals in theoretically optimum ways.
The Future of the Social Web: In Five Eras http: //www. web-strategist. com/blog/2009/04/27/future-of-the-social-web/ • Groundswell to continue, in which people connect to each other – rather than institutions. • Consumer adoption of social networks is increasing a rapid pace, so expect the space to rapidly innovate to match this trend.
• Today’s social experience is disjointed because consumers have separate identities in each social network they visit. • A simple set of technologies that enable a portable identity will soon empower consumers to bring their identities with them.
• The Web will evolve step by step from separate social sites into a shared social experience. • Consumers will rely on their peers as they make online decisions, whether or not brands choose to participate.
• Socially connected consumers will strengthen communities and shift power away from brands and CRM systems. • This will result in empowered communities defining the next generation of products.
The Five Eras of the Social Web • Era of Social Relationships • People connect to others and share • Era of Social Functionality • Social networks become like operating system • Era of Social Colonization • Every experience can now be social • Era of Social Context • Personalized and accurate content • Era of Social Commerce • Communities define future products and services
http: //blogs. zdnet. com/BTL/? p=5848 • “What will social networking be like in ten years? Who knows, but we won’t be having panels about it. • At the Always. On Stanford Summit 07, there was such a panel, titled “Social Networking 3. 0, ” led by Charlene Li, a senior analyst Forrester Research.

Ignite Social Media http: //www. ignitesocialmedia. com/semantic-social-media-the-future-ofsocial-networking-a-special-podcast/ Semantic Social Networks • “While most social networks are built around relationships, semantic social networks are built around a particular topic. • One good example of this is a new network, from the publisher of Nature, called Scitable”.
• “Scitable focuses on pulling together undergrads, postgrads and university faculty around specific scientific topics, with the initial emphasis on genetics. • In relatively short order, the site has attracted a few hundred thousand users —an amazing number given how specific (and cerebral) the topic matter is”.
• Extended Social Graphs • Extended Social Networks
