Social Movements in India - A social movement is a mass movement and a collective attempt of people to bring about a change, or to resist any change. - The concept central to any social movement is that people intervene in the process of social change, rather than remaining mere spectators or passive participants in the ebb and flow of life.
There must be a leader to lead and execute the plan and sustain the movement It is a collective effort Five key factors: 1) comprise a collective of separate units 2) Committed to a cause and can influence 3) Can bring about change 4) Perception/beliefs that can bring about change 5) Create an opposition
Four stages of Social Movements 1) Emergence – issues get expressed 2) Coalescence – visibility, leadership emerges and issues get clearly expressed, actions visible and repeated 3) Bureaucratisation – formalisation of the organisation and trained staff take over 4) Decline – repression, co-optation, success and failure (Herbert Blumer)
