Social Media and Me By Jason Liao Introduction
Social Media and Me By Jason Liao
Introduction Social Media has greatly changed the way we consume information by allowing anyone, from anywhere to comment and post their opinions on social media. In a way, social media is a blessing, it allows anybody, regardless of race, religion, or social standing to post their opinions behind an electronic wall. Unfortunately, this style of media is also a curse as stated in this article. Because the flow of information is unfiltered and relatively anonymous, it lacks the humanism seen in other forms of communication can lead to hate speech, bullying and cybercrime.
1. How have social media platforms changed the way we consume and understand information? This article’s main focus is the confusion that comes with social media. Since anyone can post, misinformation can get mixed in with the truth. With new opinions from people of all ages and backgrounds, the content of an event on social media can get blurry spurring rumors. As a digital rumor travels, it will continue to be distorted in a kind of “telephone game”. In conclusion, the greatest difference seen in today’s social media is that all information must be judged as possible opinion and taken with a grain of salt as anyone can become an “author” whether others like it or not.
2. What value do you get from online social interactions? In this TED talk, the value obtained from social media is that it allows anybody, regardless of race, religion, or social standing to post their opinions with less discrimination. Another benefit of social media is that communication is almost instant, and information can travel around the world from far flung places giving people voices who would otherwise not have one. This means people can form a connection with the people they love using social media even if they are radically different people from different places.
3. How is social media and social capital helping to form youth culture? Social media now forms a vital part of youth culture by being the most popular form of media. Ideas from social media such as: shorter articles, jokes(memes), and social media’s style of free speech and social currency are now all ideas ingrained in many young people’s minds. These ideas may make them more proactive then the previous generations which would have grown up with TV and newspaper. (comes from a single provider with littles options. )
4. Do you see any similarities between the world presented in this video and the world you live in? The dystopian world seen in “Black Mirror” is not very different from the social media world observed online. Every action is done to raise one’s “social score” which can be constantly judged, changed, and observed. This is the exact situation many people find themselves in online where everybody is scrambling to post themselves to get likes. Every person is also fervently holding onto their phones, checking them constantly to see if their score has gone up or done. This is another reflection of the social media addiction in our world.
5. How does the main character gain and lose points? Why are these points important to her? What value might be derived from this type of social interaction? The main character gains and losses points based on other’s opinions of her. Each decision she makes can be judged by others at an instant. Since anybody can see her score, it is vital that she only makes choices that increase that score to give others a good impression.
6. How are social interactions changed in this world? Black mirror gives a blunt, visual representation of the toxic interaction that occurs only online. Most conversations in that world sound unauthentic and forced. There are constantly rumors floating around and everyone is hiding their true feelings for fear of losing “social points”
