How have social media platforms changed the way we consume and understand information?
Social media platforms are designed to have contents that attract constant attention. Unlike their purpose of providing endless amounts of useful, or at least authorized information, it bombards us with unfiltered posts as long as it’s interesting. These information tend to be unclear and open-ended, leaving users to want additional contents. Ultimately, the social media platform influences the users to seek for interesting information regardless of the legitimacy.
1. What value do you get from online social interactions? 2. How is social media and social capital helping to form youth culture?
1. Social media’s value is in its effectiveness and in today’s world. Although the main purpose of use can vary by individual, it is influential and convenient in numerous ways. It enables communications over the globe, creates connections between strangers, and carries trends. Nowadays, especially where trends and popularity differs from day to day, social media also has value in alerting this change to the world. 2. Social media is a big portion of the culture in today’s society. The various uses of social media platforms combined with a gigantic community provides an exigent experience. When it comes to the youth generation, this becomes even more crucial as the biggest portion of social media is composed of teenagers. In terms of social capital, social media allows our community to create connections, and share identities. Therefore, the social media by itself, can be considered a portion of youth culture.
1. Do you see any similarities between the world presented in this video and the world you live in? How does the main character gain and lose points? 2. Why are these points important to her? What value might be derived from this type of social interaction? 3. How are social interactions changed in this world?
1. I see similarities between the real and the fictional world in terms of social currency. I assume that the points are effected through a rating system, and it has significance as it determines your personal values in the fictional society. The fact that users are over-aware of the increase/decrease of their social currency is similar in our world, where the number of followers or likes define our presence in society. 2. I believe that In the fictional world, social currency decides one’s value in society. It creates one’s reputation, and one’s worth in terms of personality. Thus, the points must be important to the women in the video. 3. In terms of social interactions, the fictional and the real worlds were similar in its helpfulness in a converation. It created connections between two women and gave them a topic to discuss. Although the conversation might sound dry, considering that these two people just met, being awkward is a normal situation. Because conversations in our world between strangers are identical to this, there wasn’t a big change in the fictional world.
