SOCIAL MEDIA AND A POSITIVE PUBLIC IMAGE Rotary
SOCIAL MEDIA AND A POSITIVE PUBLIC IMAGE Rotary District 5910 Seminar Presented by: Rebekah Maxwell August 25, 2018
AGENDA • Social media policy • Responding to negativity online • Creating positive content
SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY • What is the overall purpose of a social media policy? • Ensure Rotarians and volunteers understand their obligations when using social media • Inform Rotarians and volunteers of managing the risks associated with social media use and the impact on the reputation of a Rotary Club and Rotary International • Safety of Rotarians and volunteers • Mutually protect an organization and its employees and volunteers
SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY • A social media policy should not: • Prevent, discourage, or unnecessarily limit Rotarians’ or volunteers’ expression of opinion or online activities • Questions to ask yourself in developing a policy handout • A social media policy should be customized to your club/organization.
SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY • Keep it simple: • It is the truth? • Is it fair to all concerned? • Will it build goodwill and better friendships? • Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
NEGATIVE POSTS • Listen carefully • Response time matters • Be human, be transparent, never go negative • Respond publicly before moving to a private conversation • Know when to engage and when not to
WHEN TO NOT ENGAGE • Reserve the right to remove any postings of a vulgar, discriminatory, or inappropriate nature • Be wary of deleting comments • If a comment is derogatory, you can report it and on some networks, like Facebook, you can hide the comment from the public.
FACEBOOK USE FOR A POSITIVE IMAGE • Establish a social media manager for the year • Encourage positive sharing from all Rotarians • Positive posts can outweigh negative comments if you are consistent and create positive, engaging content
CREATING CONTENT • What is a project your club is currently planning? • What awards has your club or Rotarians in your club received? • It doesn’t have to be all Rotary business • What is a tradition in your club? • What is going on in your community?
CREATING CONTENT • Show pictures • Ask questions • Give information • Share Rotary International posts
