WHAT IS SOCIAL STRUCTURE • Social structure includes the different classes in a sociaty

WHAT IS SOCIAL STRUCTURE • Social structure includes the different classes in a sociaty (upper class, middle class & low class) and who/what makes up these classes.

THE UPPER CLASS • The Victorian upper class often inherited their money rather than

THE UPPER CLASS • The Victorian upper class often inherited their money rather than earning it. Through centuries their families had built up enough money for each generation to live a luxurious life. • Of course some of these aristocrats were owners of large scale manufacturing industries which blossomed in the industrial revolution and caused them to make a huge profit. • The upper class also had an advantage when it came to learning. They had well educated teachers and often went to high class private schools. From this came a brilliant group of rich nobles, dukes and other wealthy families.

THE MIDDLE CLASS • The Victorian middle class took up a large portion of the English population. They ranged from the fairly wealthy to the three figure salary workers, both of which could afford a neat and pleasant lifestyle. • Many of these people had plenty of money to classify them as a higher class citizen, but since they worked with their hands and got dirty they were inevitably placed with the lower class. • A good portion of the “Great Middle Class” had beautiful clothes and a hand full of servants from which they relied on.

THE LOW CLASS (WORKING CLASS) • The Victorian working class is what pip and his family from Great Expectations would be classified under. They don’t have very much money and they are often poorly educated with little to no food to spare. • They often spent their days working hard to keep themselves fed and out of debt. Without any money left over for recreational use their homes are often bleak and small.
