Social Behaviors of Chambered Nautilus Frank Grasso John
Social Behaviors of Chambered Nautilus Frank Grasso, John C. Chamberlain, Jennifer Basil, Naomi Lewandowsky, Karina Arellano
Background • Nautilus are an endangered species mostly because of the demand for their beautiful shells • Not much is known about their social behaviors or their mating patterns • The more we learn about their behaviors, the more we can do to aid in their conservation George Grall, National Aquarium
Question • My question: Can the accelerometers be used to construct a 3 D motion path for a Chambered Nautilus? • Broad Question: How will being able to construct a 3 D motion path for Nautilus aid in future research and in conservation efforts?
Accelerometer • HOBO Pendant G acceleration data logger and base station • 3 -axis accelerometer(x, y, and z) • Waterproof and positively buoyant
Initial Plan • Wanted to put accelerometer on a Khepera II robot to establish a known error • Did not work out because the robot was missing a program that lets it communicate with the computer
Experimental design • Velcro and superglue the accelerometer on the back of shell • Place Nautilus in clear tank and record acceleration data along with video data to see how close the calculated positions are to the actual positions • 2 cameras

Future Applications • Once it has been proved that the accelerometer can be used to recreate the motion path of a chambered nautilus, it can be applied to robots • Biomimetic robotics • Nauti-bot
