The society of Latvia • There around 2 milion people in Latvia (based on the 2012 counting results). • Every person comes from a diffrent social background.
With social background we understand: One's social demographics such as one's color, creed, race, language, education, life style, religion (sometimes included as social background), and nationality. There are many factors that contribute towards one's social background.
In Latvia families are supported by: State; Local councils, The Latvian Red Cross; Groups of support; Angels over Latvia (national level social movement, project based); • Family Support Day Center. • • •
The states supported funds • In total, right now Latvia has got 15 different types of support funds: – For rent; – Health treatment; – For families that have a lot of children; – Families who do not have a lot of money; – etc.
The Latvian Red Cross • The Latvian Red Cross is a non-governmental nonprofit volunteer-led humanitarian organization. – They help the people who have come into material difficulties; – They help to prepare people for the first aid and disaster events; – Help people needing food or shelter; – It has special Youth programme
Groups of support • As well as the Latvian Red Cross, there also groups of people, for example school students who go to help the elderly in the retierment homes, tidy the parks or forests, replant trees; • Actions organized by church, such as «soup kitchen» for people in need; • Project based movements, like «ziedot. lv»
Angels over Latvia • Angels over Latvia is the contry wide supported program, where people can donate to help kids that have really bad deseases. • It happens each year around Christmas time and you can donate in special donation boxes in supermarkets, or ringing the phone number to donate 1 Euro.
Family Support Day Center • People from these centres help families (kids and parants) in different ways: – Special lessons to teach new parents how to bring up children; – A place where kids can go after school, to hang out or ask for help for their homework; – They organize trips to different places, as well as celabrate all the holidays in the style of latvian traditions.
Personal attitudes • Each family have diffrent financials, as well as traditions. • There are families that still hold on to some of the old latvian tradition, and some that follow the newest ones. • There are some that although have a bad financial status, still allow there kids to go to art, music, sport, dance schools.
