Why are there Inequalities? • There were 49. 9 million uninsured Americans in 2010 making up 16. 3% of the total population. • In 2017, the figure had dropped but was still high – approximately 8% of Americans were uninsured accounting for 28 million Americans. • It is estimated that 26. 9% of people earning less than $25, 000 a year were uninsured. • Many people may be unemployed and therefore do not get cover from an employer. • Not all employers provide insurance.
Percentage of adults aged 18 – 64 who were uninsured 2010 – June 2017 Although there have been clear improvements in the number of people getting health insurance in the past 7 years it is clear that inequality still exists in healthcare regarding race: Hispanics and African Americans are still more likely to be uninsured.
Lack of routine care – health problems may not be detected before they become serious People with no insurance are more likely to die before seeking medical help than an insured person. What are the consequences of not having health insurance in the USA? Debt which can lead to poverty – with the average cost of medical care without insurance extremely high, the impact is often very great financially Inability to work leading to poverty… causing further issues as unable to obtain health insurance
