Culture and individual • Culture – A set of values, beliefs and traditions shared by a group of people
Culture and individual • Socialization – A process where individuals become parts of their community/culture How have you been socialized into your community/culture? Have you been able to change anything in your community/culture?
Culture and individual • Culture and individual are in dynamic interaction – E. g. culture can shape the ideals of an individual, but an individual can change the ideals
Social psychology • The scientific study of how we behave toward the other people and how those people influence us
Social norms • Sets of rules based on socially and culturally shared beliefs of how we should behave What kind of norms do you have? What kind of differences in norms have you encountered?
TASK • Describe your intuitions on the following groups to your pair/group • • • – What kind of attributes • do members of these groups on the right have? • – You can also figure out other example groups BMW-drivers Students in Norssi Ice hockey players Anime fans Heavy metal guitar players
TASK • How do your intuitions on certain groups affect your behaviour? • Do your intuitions affect you in a positive or negative way?
Stereotypes • Mental representations by which we generalize and categorize groups and their members – Can be positive and negative, but are mostly negative
Stereotypes • Prejudice – Tendency to dislike people because of their group membership • Discrimination – Negative behaviours toward others based on prejudice • Aggression – Harming others physically and/or mentally on purpose
TASK • Search for real examples of prejudice, discrimination and aggression • Try to find ways how fight against these unwanted phenomena
TASK • Five volunteers are needed to form a group • Audience invents a discussion topic for the group • The group must discuss about the topic with the help of the teacher’s instructions
Social roles • Assumptions on how we should behave in certain positions – We start to behave according to our roles • Roles may lead to discrimination and aggression
TASK • Reflect on your social situations – What kind of roles have you had in your social situations? – How have the roles influenced your behaviour?
