What is Social and Cultural change? · Society is a community of people and their social structure. In a social change there is an altercation or difference in the way the society or its people live. Social changes have affected our history and will continue to affect our future. · A societies culture can be anything from Art to its religion and it heavily affects its social structure. Learning • Mosques, temples and churches were not only used for architectural discovery but as centers of education. Muslims promoted literacy among their sons and sometimes their daughters if they were wealthy. They promoted literacy so they would be able to read religious texts. In sub-Saharan Africa the spread of Islam caused a cultural change that was associated with the spread of literacy that was initially in Arabic but then translated into characters that could be used to write local languages. Learning continued… • In India literacy was not as widely used because it already had an ancient heritage of writing. Muslim scholars did continue to study Islamic law, theology and administration. They also professed in subjects such as mathematics, medicine and science. The demand for books were very great even though they were almost rare due to the fact that the printing press had not been accessible yet. Religion • Muslim rulers usually did not impose their language but they did try to convince many people of the superiority of their faiths and of Allah. Islam's influence spread through the Swahili coast, Sudan, coastal India and in Southeast Asia by trade routes. Marriage also spread Islam believes because in their faith they were allowed to marry multiple wives and this caused for the production of many children and definitely more of the faith. Social distinctions • There were many slaves due to the increase in the elite class and the wealthy merchants. Slaves were sometimes given as gifts to emperors and they came from Africa. This country was heavily run by slaves and they were taught either a special skill or trade. • Women especially younger girls who had not reached puberty and were still virgins were also sold. prettier girls were sold for higher prices and your culture before such as the place were you where from also affected on how much the girl was sold for. Women were set up at higher standards and could be killed if they did anything against their husbands wishes. They had very little rights but where very well known for their cooking.
