Social 30 -2 Chapter 5 “Impacts of Liberalism”
Words • Cost of Living. • Industrial Revolution. • Standard of Living.
Up to this point • It seems that we have been talking about the Benefits of Capitalism and Liberalism. • How it made life better…. • But, things are not always that cut and dry. • Let’s talk about some of the negative effects of Capitalism and Liberalism.
Review… • How does Capitalism work? • What are some pros and cons?
Pros and Cons • Pro • Con
Industrialization • In simple words: • The move from farming to manufacturing.
+ Effects : • workers could be disciplined to start at a specific time and do a specific task • there was a division of labour (work tasks) to increase productivity. • hardworking entrepreneurs created/invented new products to make money - Effects : • factories had harsh rules - exploited workers • low wages and people lived in slums in the cities • quality of life was worse than before factories existed.
Workplaces • From historical evidence we can determine that the work places were not focused on safety or health. • Many Men, Women, and Children worked in Coal Mines, Cotton Mills, Etc…
“North and South”
Move to the cities • As farms became mechanized, people moved to the cities. • They though they would find good jobs. • But, many found jobs in factories that were not that glamorous.
Continued • As the IR progress, Laissez-faire capitalism took hold. • Governments felt that the factory would take care of the people. • The factory owners got richer and took advantage of the workers.
During the IR • During the IR factory workers made great profits. • They were called robber barons. • Robber baron was a cold name given to mean someone who was cold and ruthless in pursuit of money. • They called them selves Captains of Industry by people who supported capitalism.
Income Gap and Cost of Living • As rich people invested more money, they got richer and richer. • With this, the gap between rich and poor got larger and larger. • Peoples standard of living did not improve during the IR. • Although people had more money, the cost of living also increased. • I think we can understand that in this town!
Problems for the working class • The ideas of “true” classical liberalism led to workers being mistreated. • Cities became polluted and slums formed. • Long hours, child labor, without government intervention.
Continued… • Workers worked in unforgiving situations. • Long hours, no ventilation, disease. • There were also a sharp rise in child labor as families needed more income. • Children were small, agile, and cheep. • http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=AVwit. V RTu. Tw&feature=related
• When my mother died I was very young, And my father sold me while yet my tongue Could scarcely cry " 'weep!" So your chimneys I sweep & in soot I sleep. • There's little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head, That curl'd llke a lamb's back. was shav'd: so I said "Hush. Tom! never mind it, for when your head's bare You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair. " • And so he was quiet & that very night, As Tom was a-sleeping, he had such a sight! That thousands of sweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned or Jack. Were all of them lock'd up in coffins of black. • And by came an Angel who had a bright key, And he open'd the coffins & set them all free; Then down a green plain leaping, laughing, they run, And wash in a river. and shine in the Sun. • Then naked & white, all their bags left behind, They rise upon clouds and sport in the wind; And the Angel told Tom, if he'd be a good boy, He'd have God for his father & never want joy. • And so Tom awoke; and we rose in the dark. And got with our bags & our brushes to work. Tho' the morning was cold, Tom was happy & warm; So if all do their duty they need not fear harm
