Agenda Introduction What is SNMP? What is CMIP? SNMP vs. CMIP Conclusion SNMP vs. CMIP 2
Introduction Network management is essential for companies. Exchanging information become more efficient. Network management needs protocols. Two important protocols: n n Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP) SNMP vs. CMIP 3
SNMP Why SNMP ? SNMP is located in Application layer. SNMP responsible for exchanging data between network devices. SNMP has three mechanisms: 1. Managed devices: Collecting and sorting data. 2. Agents: Managing data. 3. Network management system (NMS): Implements the application SNMP vs. CMIP 4
Advantages and Disadvantages Advantages: § Easy to use § Expandability Disadvantages: § Weak security § Too simple! SNMP vs. CMIP 5
CMIP Created in 1988 by Internet Activities Board (IAB). n Government and Corporations invested. Common Management Information Services Element (CMISE). n Information exchange between management stations and management agents. Remote Operations Service Element (ROSE). n Sends and receives Protocol Data Units (PDUs). SNMP vs. CMIP 6
CMIP 11 Data units or operations n n n M-Event. Report-Confirmed M-Get M-Linked-Reply M-Set-Confirmed M-Action-Confirmed M-Create M-Delete M-Cancel-Get SNMP vs. CMIP 7
SNMP vs. CMIP Similar operations: SNMP vs. CMIP 8
SNMP vs. CMIP What SNMP is to TCP/IP is what CMIP is to OSI. MIB n More objects in CMIP. Security n Community name; authorization, access control, and security logs. Polling n Reporting and polling. SNMP vs. CMIP 9
SNMP vs. CMIP 10
Conclusion In our opinion n SNMP and CMIP should not be compared. LANs and WANs n SNMP better for LANs; CMIP better for WANs Analogies n n High-level programming language and assembly language. Like two different religions. Religions should not be compared. Network Manager acts as God. Sacrifices (celibacy). Services (help the poor). SNMP vs. CMIP 11
